Is there any cost effective way of getting personal breakdown cover without paying an additional premium for having a vehicle over 15 years old? In my case I have a 2 yr old 125 and an 19 yr old 500. If I were to get personal cover based on my young little bike, I suppose it would cover me quite adequately on my rather old larger machine, or would theybe likely get touchy and refuse to rescue me?

International Rescue want to stick on an additional premium of £40 for a machine over 15, but they only ask for the details of one machine. I guess it's just me being a skinflint, but I have a national reputation to live up to. Smile

Get your insurance with carol nash. They give free European breakdown cover, which in my case is on a 18 year old Bros and a 30 year old CB550 Thumbs Up

This is what I'm rapidly concluding might be the best answer in future. Unfortunately, my renewal is up in June and I'm making a long trip in less than a fortnight. I might just have to suck it up and pay the premium now; it serves me right for not thinking about this when I renewed my cover before.

It's funny how I was happy to mercilessly thrash a Chinese 125 for 50 miles at a time to and fro with no cover, but give me an old Honda V-twin and it doesn't quite seem right. Confused

International breakdown is fine providing the bike on the policy is the new one - have got older bikes recovered no problems on a policy that coverts a newer 'main' bike.

I wouldn't but insurance purely on the basis of the recovery - especially as I believe the Carol Nash one is fairly limited.

Why do you say the Carol Nash one is fairly limited? I didn't have to use it, but heard people on here rate it better than the Rac, AA etc.

Nath's right, getting breakdown cover from your insurer is a real loop-hole for older bikes. Otherwise you usually you get a 50-100% premium weighting for your bike being over 10 years old.

I swindled 12 months Rac European breakdown out of my insurer for £30 this year.

Yep, carole Nash here too, I know it isn't appropriate for what you were wanting at the moment but CN originally specialised in classic and vintage bike insurance. That is pretty much why they do the recovery thing. They insure older bikes and expect them to break down from time to time.
