Does this seem a fair service charge?

I posted a few days ago about a bike mechanic who was known to rip off bikers and charge for a unfair service, MOT, repair etc.
I collected my bike last thursday and my total service including the repaired chain was: £258.53

I paid the full amount while feeling half a stone lighter, I asked for my parts which he gave to me (smaller parts were apparently disposed in a controlled manner) and I was also given a itemised job sheet.
Below I have copied exactly what the mechanic had written on the sheet, please feel free to comment on whether this seems a fair service.

I took my bike to my local garage to have a quick visual inspection, he concluded that the brake shoes, although worn were still road legal and the clutch lever was in good condition and should not have been replaced.
He also found that the brake lever was not moving properly, I checked and found it to be sticking, ie when I moved the rear brake lever the metal pushrod would move to activate the brake pads but wouldn't return its position via the assistant of the spring, he commented and said it was a 'poor' attempt and very dangerous!

I'm unsure what to do and whether I'm able to do anything, was the service charged at an acceptable level?

Sounds like a lot of monet to me. Most i've paid is £100. But if its a major service (24K?) it will be expensive. My mate once paid about £200 for a service on an RX50!, don't know where that bill came from.

Bit of a mixed up receipt, but I think there is an error there. I think the labour comes to £113.75+vat (so he has possibly charged you £20+vat, £23.50, extra by mistake).

Parts prices are within reason. Not 100% certain what he has done (eg, "Repair, correctly adjust and lube chain") but the time taken might well be within reason (although probably not a fast job). The bit that stings is the labour of £35+vat an hour which seems quite high for a small independent.

I'm having trouble working out the way he's split your bill

He's charged you for replacing the back brake shoes (which apparently didn't need doing) and then he's also charged you for 'correctly adjusting' the chain, which he'd have to do if he's had the back wheel out anyway.

He's charged you £3.50 to tip the old oil into a drum - fair enough, as a trader he probably has to get a permit to dispose of old oil at the council tip. He obviously doesn't take it there in 1 gallon tins like the rest of us

If he's itemising £0.40 for a washer for the oil filler cap (of course he's changed it ) then what are the sundries?

So there's £78 for the service, £26 for doing the back brake and £35 for doing the chain?


If the other bloke reckons it's not safe, get it in writing and go to trading standards - they may already have a folder on this one.
