I'm torn between getting something like an sv650, or a car when i turn 17.

Pro bike;
fun
fast
cheap
cheap to run
look good
sound good
feel good factor...

But i dont know if these are enough to outweigh the fact that a car is better in the winter, more practical, holds more than 2 people, comfort etc...

Theres a battle going on in my head and i need some advice Laughing

cheers
palmer Thumbs Up

I was lucky in that when i turned 17 i had a car bought for me and i had no interest in bikes so the choice was easy! But since your 'on your own' so to speak buying wise i'd get a car (cant believe im saying it) If your going to uni/college your gonna need to take books and crap with you and its easier in the car tbh.
But like you say you will have more fun on the bike. But your missus wont shag you on the bike like she will in the car. Laughing Wink Thumbs Up Could you not split your car fund and have both ? Drive an old banger and have a nice bike Laughing

Have thought about it. But i think im too much of a tart to drive a banger round Laughing

I could possibly get a bike, and then be insured on one of my parents cars... would that work out cheaper?

Laughing Im the same, wouldnt want to drive a banger.

Good point, wouldn’t cost to be put on a car as a named driver, maybe £300-400 on a small car. Shame i cant really do that as my my rents drive big 4x4s which would cost a fortune to insure even as a named driver Confused

As much as I hate to admit it at the moment its looking like the car has more + points Sad

In the short term it would be cheaper, but i dont think you would gain any no claims bonus being insured on your parents motors. So when you want to insure your own car it'll still be expensive.
That does sound like a perfect suggestion though, you could have the best of both worlds as it were. Nice bike for the good days and use of a car when you need it. Its what i would do, will your parents not help you out at all? Insurance is still a killer at 19, mine didnt go down much until this year when i turn 25 Crying or Very sad
My parents said your on your own to me aswell lol 12k later ive had 3 cars off my dad. Laughing

This gets my vote too, but take a look at the actual running costs (Cars / Bikes) - take into account exactly how much of a banger you are willing to put up with. You can't use both at the same time, so is it worth it to you to pay insurance on a vehicle that spends half it's time unused?

Or, get two bikes - one nice one and a winter hack with a sidecar Smile

They are willing to buy my bike/car, and i have to pay insurance (which will be more than the bike probably Laughing )

Was thinking of an 02ish sv650, seen a few clean ones going for 2k. Will my NCB on the bike not count for cars too? So even if im just a names driver, i should still get ncb off the bike? no?

No, the bandits that are insurance companies don't count NCB on cars for bikes and vice versa.

Direct line allow named drivers to build up no claims, but they are the only one currently that do.

I had a similair choice to make, I went with bike, best decision I ever made. Of course the winters suck and you need to odd favour for transporting bulky things but it's all worth it. I'm 20 now and only just learning to drive.
Go bike, you know it makes sense.

I've seen a few adverts, infact i think there was one on this site for an insurance companies that counted car NCB towards a bike policy. I think footman james also ask if you have any bike NCB when insuring a car.

Get the bike at 17, then when you leave college and you're earning some cash, get both Thumbs Up

You don't have to buy an expensiver bike either. I rode about on an old Jawa 350 that I paid £250 for when I was at college.

Our university bike club was pretty active at the time with weekly meetings, first tuesday chip-shop runs and plenty of camping ride-outs in the summer. Nobody in that club had a bike less than 10 years old.

You both have too much money if you can even think about being able to own a car or new-ish bike when you are at college.

A bike will keep you sane if you are doing a commute through town.

Also remember to factor in the cost of parking if you get a car.

I don't have too much money! I earn £100 a week working part time, and nearly all of it goes on my bike. I saved for that bike, and worked bloody hard on it. It's not a case of too much money it's case of being handed it rather than earning it.

You're just jealous coz you had a jawa lol Razz

like anyone would be jealous of a cagiva!

From my personal experience, cars are a waste of time at 17. You WILL end up with a shite boring slow car... and the cost of ownership is hideous for what your getting. Insurance and tax will be a killer compared to a bike too. I had a whole bunch of shite hatchback things when I ditched bikes for a brief period at 17 - 18 (did have a cool jeep though) and now I have a decent car the costs have risen again.

The very worst thing about car ownership though, is that you'll be treated like a taxi, but not one that gets paid. And the novelty wears out very quickly.

Would he sv650 be a good choice then?

basically i need it to go along A roads to college, have the grunt to overtake, handle well, and be fun at the weekends etc etc.

Also what would it be like for insurance at 17? Should it be cheaper than a 1.1/1.3 car?

If anyone owns one, i'd like to hear your opinions Thumbs Up

thanks

From what I can gather from 650 Owners it will fill all those requirments, as for the Insurance, that's case specific.....

I've found that the insurance of a similar SV is half the price of the insurance of a 1.1 litre fiest type thing.
