How is it done?

I'm wanting to make a chatroom, very simple, like the bcf irc chatroom, something where you pick a name at the logon and the just go... if it was based on irc how would i set it up? is there a site which will host it? can i host it myself without php?

really not sure where to start Sad

You don't 'make' IRC channels. You join a channel, and if there is nobody already in it you are made the op and you now have your channel. Big channels work by having a bot which sits in the channel 24/7 so when you leave you do not lose your control over the channel. All you've got to do is decide on which IRC network to use, and decide on the name of the channel (providing it isn't already being used).

If you are wanting to have a 'chatroom' accessed from the web than things become more difficult. Most web based IRC access is done with Java applets which are hardly ideal. The BCF irc bot is pretty rare (unless they've become all the rage over the past year or so). The only other thing I've come across that works the same way was a Perl script, but I think it must have been very cpu-heavy as it never took off.

If you want an IRC bot and have a cable/adsl connection, you could do far worse than using an old Sun Sparc workstation running Debian linux with the 'Eggdrop' IRC bot. Old Sun hardware is as common as muck and goes dirt cheap on eBay (people in LUGs etc can often be found giving it away free), but looks really cool and will impress your mates who think that Windows is the be all and end all of computing.

To my shame i didn't even know what i was looking for, para chat ive used before and made one with it Thumbs Up

As for the irc, ahhh that makes more sense, never totaly understood how it worked.. i'll think about makeing one similar at some point in the future, the only real advantage is that fact it wont need a login and the members name will be shown up propperly.. but for now this is more than enough

Much appreciated Thumbs Up
