Hopefully I won't need it though!

Having not bothered to try and sleep tonight, I'm just getting showered and changed so I'm in plenty of time for my taxi ride across London in rush hour traffic, to my appointment with my surgeon who will be removing the horrendous piece of scaffolding pictured below.

It's been 3 months and 2 days since the operation to install it, and another 3 weeks on top of that since the accident that made it necessary.

During that time, there hasn't been a single day where I haven't been in constant discomfit because of it, or a day without at least a couple of occasions where I have suffered agonising pain.
I also have to clean and dress the two puncture-sites where the pins go through my skin and into the bone, at least once a day, and more often if I've been unusually active and the wounds have bled or seeped ooze everywhere.

As you can imagine, today is quite a big day for me!

However, while I've been looking forward to it, I've also been dreading it a bit - the operation is carried out while I'm awake, which is quite a daunting prospect, even if it only takes 10 minutes as promised.

My walking is still a little stiff, and I get tired very easily, but I'm hoping that once this is out, my poor abused muscles will be able to finally heal, so my strength can finally return!

With any luck, today will bring a certain amount of closure after 4 months mostly spent crippled, and mark the start of my recovery proper.

If nothing else, I'm going to sneak up to my old ward and see if I can track down my beautiful african nurse Melanie!

Mr. Green

Hi Mr James,

Good luck, and hope you are well, I can't imagine I'd be so strong if it was me with the scaffold attached.

Let us know how you get on.

Well, I'm back!

The day didn't start off too well, the transport didn't turn up for an hour, on ringing the hospital they swore blind it had never been booked - which is false, I saw the nurse put it on the system.

Anyway, I wasn't going to miss out on today, having stressed about it for weeks, so I staggered off to the trainstation and braved the tube to get across London under my own steam.

Got X-rayed by a cute and friendly indian lass, and then jumped the massive queue in the waiting room for some reason.

They ushered me into a room with what looked like a deluxe toolbox in it, spanners/sockets/pliers and knives!

Contrary to what the nurse had told me at my last check up, my surgeon got stuck in without me getting any painkillers or anasthetics - apparantly the pins go so deep that only being knocked out by a GA would do any good.

When he unscrewed the bolts and let out the tension, the whole thing TWANGED - along with my legs and pelvis! Once I'd got over that, and the main frame was removed, the surgeon reached for his pliers and started unscrewing the pins - that was horrific, grinding pain right in my bones, for about 2 minutes on each pin. My muscles were so tense with the strain of not kicking out that the Sister grabbed them and pinned them to the table!

Saw the pins in the sink along with the frame, all covered in blood and pus, they were huge, around 9-10", with 2" of drill-threading on the business end! Seriously nasty, and they wouldn't even let me keep one!

Still, was all over in around 10mins or so, slapped some dressings on and I was out of the front door. It feels great, I've been smirking and chuckling all the way home. I can stand up straight again, stretch down without pain, wear my clothes normally - I had to wear a belt for the first time in 4 months!

Now all I have to do is concentrate on losing some weight and building my strength back up. Doctor has cleared me to go back to work in a desk job, and to do whatever low impact exercise I feel up to, so I guess the road to recovery starts here!

Thanks for the messages of support, if I wasn't so evil I'd probably be blushing right about now!

/me walks off to see which of my old trousers will actually accomodate his enhanced arse.

When can you get back in the saddle, or have you been put off forever?
