Blaming religion for many of the ills in this world is like blaming guns for shooting deaths. Both religion and guns are merely tools used by humans to control/harm others and both are seen by many as the obvious scapegoat as it's easier to believe that the fault lies with an outside factor rather than the humans themselves. Equally, both can also be used well and without such negative side effects.

Therefore, a world without religion would not see an end to that which we see done in its name. It would simply see less religion. You do not lose the negative effects as they simply transfer to something else but you do lose (at least some of) the positive effects that it can bring.

Sadly, I personally think it's people that are the problem.

It's just that religion provides a very easy excuse to do what they want to do.

Inspired rebuttal there...Clapping

And yes, the people who cite religion as their reason for such behaviour would, I believe, fight over all sorts of matters if they did not have religion to cite as driving force. Whether it would be about Jaffa Cakes is a whole other question... although... that whole 'is it a biscuit, is it a cake?' business did go on for some time...

Quoting Shade (who used to post on BCF) from another forum:

Just for the record, Shade does not hold with religion.

I think religion has now served its purpsoe and isnt that useful, but the basis of civilised society and obeying laws comes from religion.

Before people were used to obeying laws, you would do what you could get away without someone kicking your ass. If you didnt think you could get away with it, you wouldnt do it. If lots of people believe in some guy who can see everything and send them to hell if they do bad things most will be good.

We have had this stuff so long that most people have morales even if they dont believe in god. Of course not everyone has morales but as long as most do, society and civilization can develop.

Without law and order nothing big could develop and it would be just small communities defending themselves from marauding hordes.

I dont think law and order could have developed without religion, but once you have law and order, it wont fall apart if religion goes away.

Religion does cause a lot of wars and problems.

Look at Northern Ireland for god sake, who even knows the difference between protestant and catholic religions, let alone gives a toss?
