I ve been looking at one near me....i'am a fan of 400's even tho i am a 6ft 2" lass ...would you say that one of these is a step down in handling and performance to a TRX850?
I used to have an old E reg GSXR400 but that went pop before i got really confident on it so i've not got much experiance to base any opinions on really. |

He says hes a fan of 400's so a 600 would be selling out
Cbr400's are a laugh and much easier and cheaper to work on then the v4's like mine.

Performance very similar to a 400/4 but they are built to a budget and quite common, loadsa fun and easier to live with then the cbr + plus better for a taller rider.

Don't buy that bike it might be old and shagged!!
Handling wise i've no idea, but the 400's have built up a reputation for good handling, i've not really heard about the TRX being some sort of hidden secret. Although on the road, it is pretty much the rider that makes all the difference so it doesn't really matter.
The TRX will probably weigh a fair bit more, and the weight will be more noticable as it's a taller bike, i'd prefer to have a slightly less powerful bike that feels like it weighs nothing than a bike which is slightly faster but feels heavy. The power will be a lot more readily available on the trx though. |
I fail to understand this.
I have ridden both TRX 850's and CBR400 Gull Arms.
TRX's on the whole are owned by sensible owners. They want a Ducati but want reliability. In general they are very good condition for the age and miles. Plus you can get a (lot) newer and lower mileage one for the same money (as they aren't all that popular).
CBR4's on the other hand, in my experience, are either resprayed imports with fooked suspension (after being strapped down in a crate for months) Or Resprayed imports that have been crashed by their young owners and hide damage.
Unless it has had a full suspension rebuild, is very low mileage and is in a standard paintscheme, I'd leave well alone. If you look at the first five TRX's that appear on Biketrader, guaranteed they will be in better nick than the first five CBR's that appear on Biketrader for the same money. 400's are overpriced for what they are, and will be for some time because they are becoming less and less common. The TRX is cheap because it is less popular.
Have you ridden both a TRX and a CBR4 Dom_ ? ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Tis strange how alot of people discount 400's because they are all damaged and shagged. Ive seen 18 year old bikes that are in better nick then some 2004 R6's are now
Just make sure you hpi check it, get a service history and check for the common problems (replaced fairings, botched repairs). If you dont know how to spot these problems take someone who does.
There are plenty of fantastic examples out there just take your time and find the right one, no one forces you to buy a shagged bike thats all down to yourself.
Im sure my 40k km 96 rvf400 would put almost all second hand trx's to shame. Just depends on the owner.

I fail to understand how the cbr will "more than likely be old and shagged" if the bike is old and shagged, you don't buy it. Simple as. There may be more shitters out there, but you don't have to buy one.
No i've not ridden both.
How many mint examples of cbr4's and trx's with sorted suspension have you ridden back to back? |
Hence the expression "More than likely". Trust me. Finding a good CBR400 is a lot harder than finding a good TRX850.
I have ridden two mint TRX's, one of which had full Maxton suspension and Renegade cans, and the other of which was standard and had done a lot of miles.
I have ridden a few CBR400s, one of which had a CBR600 shock conversion, Ohlins fork internals etc etc. all but one of the 'good' CBRs I rode had soggy suspension, and that 'good' one was very new and had done almost no miles.
I have ridden a few average ones, and a couple of them had warped discs, and Gooses one had all sorts wrong with it. A nice enough bike - but if that was one of the better examples then I'd really go for a TRX.
I still find it amusing that people insist on giving their opinion when they haven't even ridden the bikes in question. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Finding a good example may be harder, but it's still do-able, so it won't be "more than likely shagged" if you buy a good one, will it?
It may be harder to find, so what, that wasn't in the original question.
So, you've ridden a handful of each, i'll repeat my question, how many good cbr400s and decent trx850s with sorted suspension have you rode back to back? I find it hard to believe that you can make such an accurate judgment on comparing two bikes' handling from taking it for a quick spin then riding the other bike a few months later.
Yes, i'm giving my opinion, hilarious isn't it, how dare I. If you read back up on my posts, you will find i didn't comment on the trx's handling, i just mentioned it's weight and size. |

No, but you have to find that good one; There are a lot out there that *look* good and actually aren't. Usually the ones with Dream Machine paintjobs!
I don't need to have ridden them back to back to be able to tell you there isn't a lot in it... I have ridden each back to back with my own bike as a datum, so I think I know what each felt like in comparison.
The TRX felt taller than the CBR, comfort was about the same with less weight on the wrists. The seats are both thin and hard. The Standard TRX felt a little wheezy, but fit and had a fair bit of torque. The CBR you have to work, but when thrashed made some power. The TRX frame felt stiff, and the weight was not a noticeable issue. So The only thing that let it down was the suspension, which was better than the majority of bikes I have ridden anyway.
I honestly think that a TRX with sorted suspension would ultimately be a better bike than a CBR with sorted suspension.
Dom_ what I was really getting at above is: Aren't you only just seventeen? and as such not ridden enough different types of bike to be able to give an informed opinion of what has good and bad suspension/ handling/brakes/ whatever? As I said, I am only giving an opinion, but at least it is based upon the fact that I have ridden more than one example of both bikes mentioned in this thread. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Not sure whether this is much help, but I ride a GSX600F, and I just got a CBR400 (Gull Arm) for my wife.
What I can say is that whilst the 600 is more comfortable to ride (I'm a shade over 6'), the CBR matches it for speed, accelleration etc., and is tremendous fun to ride. So much so that when I "need" to nip to Tesco for something spurious extra purchase, I almost always take the CBR (just to check it out, you understand )
My only issue with it is that it is difficult for me to read the speedo without completely taking my eyes off the road, and that is a little diconcerting. |
