I joined BCF yesterday and wanted to say Hi to everyone.

Passed my test in 2019 at the age of 55. Mid life crisis? Possibly. And no, I did not buy a Harley.

So glad I found this forum.

After taking test rides on a number of different bikes, the one that I chose was the CB500F.

If I was buying now then the new Trident 660 would be at the top of my dream bike list.

What are your views on the R&G crash protectors (£60) compared to SW Motech's crash bars (£137) as I was looking to get some crash protection for the CB500F?

IMO, bars are better, but bungs are less to look at / better looking as a result. I have SW Motech engine guards on my BMW because the engine is basically a sitting duck for damage if it goes over Laughing

Seriously though unless your aiming to do a little light off-roading on a totally inappropriate ADV bars are a bit OTT - just go with frame sliders.

Good choice of bike. I had one, briefly. I might have another in the future.

I wouldn't bother with crash bars. With the engine as stressed member, if you have an impact sufficient to require crash bars, the engine will probably crack around the engine mounts anyway, even if you had them. Also, I generally don't like them, because if you do come off the bike, you will want to slide away from it and not have your foot caught up in them.

Got to agree with Mr. Easy-X, a splash of caution and situational awareness goes a long way toward accident prevention on two wheels. Dogs, deer, and a child, I've hit them all over the years. Realise that at some point, you will likely fail to keep the rubber side down. When that happens, you will appreciate a stout jacket (leather is my preference) and a snug fitting full face helmet, and gloves made for motorcycling.

Thanks for the sound advice. The consensus seems to be that crash protection is a bit OTT for the bike. So I'll go for the sliders.

When it comes to motorcycle clothing I have stopped just short of an airbag jacket. It makes me shudder to see someone without gloves.

There is no fairing to worry about. Sliders will be fine, as it is more in case I drop the bike while wheeling it around.
