Bear with me, this is not another "who is your favourite band/album" thread, honest!

Have the British youth forgotten how to rock?

When I was in my teens & early 20s it was the late 70s/early 80s and I was lucky enough to see loads of bands that have since become classics, or even legends. Thing is, most of the bands I saw were of a similar age to me and have kind of grown up alongside me.

I still love to go and see bands play live, and I'm happier in the pub down the road than some sodding great arena to be honest, but thinking about it all the bands I am likely to go and see at the moment are also around my age and have been around in some form or another for years.

Even relatively new bands who have achieved any kind of success like the Darkness are not that much younger than me!

I can only think of 3 bands in their teens or early 20s that I have even seen in the past year or so, never mind been impressed with. Those being Roadstar, The Glitterati and Tokyo Dragons. Today I've also found out about Red Star Rebel and Messiah, both worth a look in the future.

But surely there must be others? Who is out there keeping the faith, flying the flag, rocking the nation and all those other cliches?

Wise me up chaps. Who are the next generation of rock superstars? What am I missing out on? Or is rock music, as I suspect, becoming the province of the old codger like myself and no longer attracting the youth?

Have you been down the local recently and seen a band that have blown you away? Tell me about them! Show me pictures! Convince me that Rock Is Not Dead!

Just discovered the joys of Rob Zombie, some of that is excellent stuff. Nightwish are great too...
But it's the old school, proper rock like Iron Maiden and Metallica that are still just WOW! Queen arestill the greatest though Wink

And James Blunt should be incarcerated in a coffin of lead, and cast off a cliff into the depths of the ocean. Thumbs Up

I see loads of bands down my local metal pub, and most of them are in their early 20s. However the music is resolutely underground, and I hardly ever see bands that look like they would gain mainstream success.

I saw a good stoner rock band from London the other week called 'Sons of merricke'. I'd seen them before and was mightily impressed, but still was taken aback by the brilliance of their hard rockin' onslaught. If there was any justice in the world they'd get a record deal and be playing alongside the likes of 'Goblin and Clutch. However that would still be on an entirely different scale to what you're talking about which is mainstream chart success.

In my experience, most young bands playing a more commercial metal/rock tend to be a bit shit and come across as amateurs.

/edit: Check out www.sonsofmerrick.co.uk and listen to the mp3s in the downloads section. Those guys really know how to rock!

red hot chili peppers then REM then foo fighters Cool

Ash are still in their 20's and they rock. They are a lot heavier in real life than on their CD's too. 1977, which is admittedly 7 or 8 years old now has to be one of my favourite albums.

Ash are indeed very good, I've got all the albums. But they're uptight wankers too, I met them. Laughing Got a very high opinion of themselves.

greatmoorred please don't mention them in my presence again. Arctic Monkeys are just another tired re-incarnation of every other 'now' band. I absolutely guarantee they will either make a shit 2nd album, or no album at all.

As for you babyyam Wink ,

Ash are indeed good, as are
Muse,
Editors,
Doves,
Kaiser Chiefs,
if you liked the Verve then Richard Ashcroft is OK, if a bit whiney.
Manic Street Preachers must be approaching their 30s by now,
Snow Patrol are legendary but also mid to late 20's I reckon.
Athlete released a very strong album last year, much better than the previous ones.
Embrace also released a superb album, and by the sounds of it have another in the pipelines. But they're not really rock.
Coldplay obviously, by now in their 30s,
The Cooper Temple Clause, have no idea how old they are,
Damien Rice with a fantastic debut last year/2004,
Feeder are well-established and universally loved,
Foo Fighters are pretty good, though new album was shit,
Greenday you have to know about, commercialised rock through and through,
Hard-Fi are pretty recent but I think have a strong entry. I seem to be alone in that opinion. Laughing
The Hives are another very good band who seem to have petered out in recent years. Doesn't stop 'Your New Favourite Band' being a phenomenal album.
Hundred Reasons produced a good album, and sank back into the gutter. No idea why.
Idlewild are pretty established as 90's style rock, I like 'em.
Interpol just released an excellent album.
Keane have a 2nd album in the lines, which I hope will be as good as the 1st.
The Killers were extremely successful when they started, I loved the album but heard it too much; it annoys the crap out of me now. Enjoyable music while it lasts.
Matchbox 20 are pretty old skool, they're must be in mid to late 30s now, but 'More Than You Think You Are' is great.
Oasis I won' talk much about, they're good, they're arseholes, they're BritPop.
Offspring are pretty punky rock, been around for 15 years or so, each album (8 at my count) has been great.
Placebo are emo, depressing, shitheads. Quite like them though. Laughing
Razorlight made a great album in 04, hopefully they're not a one hit wonder.
Something Corporate are pretty punky too, in a mellow kind of way. No idea how old they are, but they can't be 30.
Supergrass have been around for a good 10-15 years, made some good albums, and now have retired I expect.
Tenacious D have a hilarious album, but there isn't much content. If they clamed down and made some real songs, they'd be supreme.
Toploader are my favourite band at the moment, they made 2 albums 'Onka's Big Moka' and 'Magic Hotel'. Everyone remembers Dancing in the Moonlight, but that's a terrible song. Rolling Eyes They're long gone, about 4 years ago, but they really should have carried on. Sad
Travis have been around for 10 years or so, very sad, slow, rock. Certainly not something to jump around to.
U2 - no comment.
The Zutons came around last year with what I thought was a fantastic album, and they were great at Glastonbury. Quirky stuff.

In my humble opinion, bands these days have become way too similar, in fact I struggle to distinguish between bands. They are all 'student cool' which really annoys me, and I also struggle to find any decent new music. I have gone of Green Day substantially since their new album because the audience they are trying to appeal to is not one I want to be associated with. I used to love them, I was enraptured by the music but now all the liccle emos and rich kids who want to be rebellious, using Daddy's credit card to buy black clothes are claiming to have liked them and I can't stand it.

So now I mainly listen to old stuff, that is quite obscure and not many people like, or just not mainstream music. My favourite bands are Rammstein, Rancid, and Metallica simply because they are out of the limelight and play their music because they want to, not because they want to be rich and famous. That's just a nice side effect of it Laughing

But in terms of up and coming bands, which coincidentally usually just make one song, get raved about for ages then die out, I would say the most listened to by people I know are:

Arctic Monkeys
Fallout Boy
Sons of Dork
Kaiser Chiefs
Razorlight
Hard Fi

Just music similar to this.

Sorry about the rant I just had to let it out Laughing

Music is shite right now.

Look at the Arctic Monkeys, another example where believe believe in da hype and jump on the "woah this is life changing" bandwagon. It's shit, I couldn't listen that if I wanted too, the only good part of "I bet you look good on the dancefloor" is actually that bit, it's the only part where I get what they are saying.

Fallout Boy piss me off as well, seen em on Kerrang, not another one of those American "bustedised" love bands, whose guitars are never connected up to the amp and they remind me of the All American Rejects so much, oh and of course I bet they aren't trying to emulate the amazing Blink 182.

See, I have seen Ash, Darkness and REM live and they were fucking good, Darkness for the least have so many critics that every Tom, Dick and Harry believes they are shit, when actually they haven't listened to the album, also the old shits who go "Oh they sound so much like Queen", Get a fucking life, that's what the media say and not you.

Ash probably are the best Band I have actually seen live and their album r0xxors as well, Going to see James Blunt next week, who cares if he is wishy washy, he produces IMO good listenable music.

James Blunt has only become hated since everyone bought his album; it's this 'if it's popular it's bad' attitude, and it's ridiculous. If people don't like him, fine, but it's the people who liked the music until it was popular who piss me off. I saw him live before his album took off and it was an absolutely stunning show, and he's still a great artist. I don't think he was made for commercialisation; apparently he's requested his album be pulled off the shelves.

I don't reduce the value of an artist just because they're popular. I've had this argument with Nath (I'm not saying this is what you do by the way Smile ) but in my opinion he's intensely narrow-minded in that he considers popular music inherently bad. Just because music is popular doesn't mean it's commercial, and doesn't mean it's bad. Blunt is I think a perfect example of this.

Whoever said Placebo are emo need a big huge slap. They are however an amazing band, and their album has been leaked onto all the torrent sites (Meds, the new one), and to be hones its absolutely amazing.
