I had been meaning to post about this for a while, though I think MCN might have beaten me to it?? I saw something about fake plates as their cover story yesterday but didn't look in any detail.

I have been thinking about the continual increase in monitoring of the motorist. There has been talk of gps systems fitted to vehicles. The MOT certificates are now digital as is road tax/fund/extortion, whatever you want to call it.

The police seem to be really taking to the ANPR systems. We have speed cameras on every corner and average speed monitoring popping up everywhere. There is CCTV and I'm pretty sure all those motorway cameras are used to maximum effect too.

All these systems seem to depend on one thing, The registered owner taking the rap. There doesn't seem to be many people caught 'red handed' like the old days. It all seems to be about who is on what database.

Although registration plates can now only be purchased when you provided the V5 and I.D there are still many places you can get plates made up in any shape or size without these documents.

I think with the increase in these monitoring systems there will also be an increase in drivers using fake plates. After all, when was the last time you were actually pulled over by the police compared to how many times you have gone through a camera.

Even if you were to be pulled over, if you were clever and with a little bit of research, you could probably pretend you were someone else anyway.

I think this hugh crackdown on very minor offensess eg speeding is causing a rise in number of more serious crimes eg Plate fraud as you mentioned.

Along similar lines I was thinking the other night. Near where I live is an area where boy racers visit quite a lot. Lately traffic police have been pulling loads of people over, dishing out loads of points and fines etc. Personally I think this is quite stupid. I understand if people going stupidly fast etc fair enough, but people only slightly over the limit are getting points. Insurance for people our age is rediculously high and giving them points are gonna make more and more people drive without insurance Confused

Ok this is what I am feeling like at the moment, and anyone who has told me in the past to calm down about this can suck my balls and everyday I hope for people like them to go through the same extreme lengths I had to go through to get my transport back.

The sad thing about this operation is the fact that at the end of the day, no one involved gives a flying fuck about you or your livelihood remember this…..
What I’m talking about are the police, DSA, DVLA, and all the other cock munchers who basically sit down with a coffee clicking a few buttons whilst this heavily automated system makes people lives hell, who aren’t committing hideous crimes. All of us speed, some speed excessively others speed where they think it is suitable and some just don’t think about it, but this makes no difference.

As a biker I’m sure all of you will know that through your time biking you have come across people with a few criticisms, which is easy to shrug off because all the while you know when you ride you are happy and its your transport.
Today money is everything, more cameras, more laws, more fines, more piss taking……LESS WORK.
I receive a letter from the police, 3 points and a small bribe, note, They don’t care
It gets sent to the DVLA, a computer tots up the relevant data and some goon signs the paper, my licence revoked, note, They don’t care.
After around £400 of fee’s I get back on the road, the only reason is because computer says no, no thinking, no compassion, no looking into the case. I know its only speeding but either the government don’t realise how much this all costs, or at worst, they do and they don’t care.
The computer sorts everything out, all you are is a name, a number and another source of income……

Every time I go out now, I don’t aim to speed but shit I’d be lying if I said it didn’t happen. I think “When am I going to get caught again?” and also the worst feeling is that I now feel privileged to ride my bike, like in some way they have ‘let’ me ride again. Rolling Eyes
Well I’m sorry but after all the shit I have taken from the police in the past this infuriates me and because of the person I am (sorry for being like this) I guess in someway it makes me more aggressive on the road, I’ve also considered either an illegal plate or flip plate.
It probably won’t happen, but I don’t feel the same about biking ATM, they talk about care and saving lives but when the accident figures haven’t changed much I know they don’t give a fuck.

Thats exactly what I was getting at killa. I'm not encouraging it but I can fully understand how someone would be driven to use a cloned plate.

I bet there are a damn site more vehicles out there right now with cloned plates than you would imagine there to be..

the indiscretion of the scameras does have good points sometims, it means people like my house mate dont get away with as much, shes a truely awfull driver, but beeing a very attractive young lady she manages to talk her way out of all manner of road offenses, which much as i love her, just isnt fair! Evil or Very Mad though i think the advantages of beeing pulled over by a copper outweigh that, at the end of the day they are at least human and can judge the situation more approprietly than a frikin computer that sees everything in black and white. I agree entirly that thyre going for the soft option, its obvious! but you wont get the buggers to admit it, its easyer to nail the honest man than the ahole criminal thats just gona nick a car or false plates and drive without so much as a licence let alone insurance and within the rules of the road....twats! And i bet youl get most coppers to agree with this point i expect thyre as pissed off with it as we are as it breeds more serious infringments of the law (at least the ones ive chatted to about it aren't happy) BAD CALL MR BLAIR Thumbs Down

Police in Lancashire have warned drivers to be vigilant over number plate cloning after officers received reports of up to 400 incidents.
The latest incident involved a driver who could be forced to pay up to £5,000 in a what he claims is a false fine for not paying London's congestion charge.

On Friday, a woman also said she would refuse to pay a fine after a London council said she was caught driving in a bus lane, even though her car was on her drive at home.

Senior police officers said drivers could reduce the risks of falling victim by choosing the garages they use carefully.

The making-up of number plates has been tightened up on recently <<HAS IT BOLOCKS!

Chief Inspector Val Prince
Joe Rooney fears although he has proof he did not drive in London's congestion charge zone, he will be forced to pay anyway.
^^WTF HE HAS PROOF!!! WHAT MORE DOES HE NEED?

The 66-year-old, of Cabus, near Garstang told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I have been told that £40 has to be paid by 19 July.

"If I don't pay it by then it will be £80, and if I fail on that it will be £120.

"But at the bottom of the letter I received it says it could go up to £5,000."

Quote:
She said: "The making up of number plates has been tightened up on recently, but I'm afraid there's always going to be rogue garages.

"If you go to a maker of registration plates you're supposed to produce the logbook for your vehicle."

Found this on BBC website personally i think it's utter bollocks that people clone your plate and you pay the fines.
Lets all get mars bar plates, intentionally get fined them then when you rplate is cloned just say "hang on you fined me for a mars bar plate, and i did not fucking change it, so how the fuck did anyone manage to write it down and report me"?

Hi

Doubt cloning is the only problem. It is cheaper and easier for them to steal a numberplate. The police do claim to crack down hard on cloned plates, but the chances are that they are only going to do this when they try and prosecute someone who is lucky enough to have solid proof that it was not them. By the time that has been proven a few months will have passed, so anyone who wants to use a cloned plate / stolen plate just needs to swap them every few months (and hope they do not clone an already cloned plate).

Do think far too many minor offences are prosecuted, while loads of possibly more serious offences are ignored. For example I was following a Peugeot 106 on Monday that had no working brake lights (I told him when he stopped at some traffic lights). Fairly sure he is not doing it on purpose but quite possibly very dangerous. No need for any tickets, just someone to pull them up and let them know.

Whats the solution? Don't know to be honest. Maybe any police force should be rationed on the number of points they can issue (say 10 points per year per 100 drivers in that region), stopping it from being a game of numbers and pushing them to aim for the more serious offences rather than the easy kills.

Or maybe just end the use of fixed penalty tickets so all offences have to go to court.

All the best

Keith

This stuff really makes me angry. We live in a world where policing focusses far too much on minor offences such as speeding as most people that commit these offences generally play by the rules and are therefore easier to catch...easier for police to reach quotas with.....and therefore easier to make money from fines with.

People that dont play by the rukes seem to get away free as they are too much hassle to catch. Its us that play by the rules that have to pay for the police and we pay for a police service that we should be considering to be working for us and to protect us...instead we just seem to be paying them to be against us.

I was watching a bit of one of the ghost rider video's the other day. Fast bike, no number plate doing ridiculous speeds along a stockholm motorway and i was just thinking how the hell would he ever get caught. He is not playing by any of the rules that would allow him to be caught.

Everything is too reliant on easy methods that rely upon people to follow rules. And we are penalised far too heavily for the slightest mistake.

Kickstart is correct:

A few months back, I stopped behind a rhd beemer with German plates. Seeing as I've lived over there I recognised the registration from near the town where I lived - I also noticed from the plate that the registration had expired in 2003.

Fat chance of him ever getting fined+points for speeding/congestion charge/whatever...

Confused What is the difference between stealing a plate and cloning one.

Surely its not as obvious as physically removing a plate from a vehicle? I would have thought that would make you very easy to identify.

When I worked in Belgium it was common for people working there to have UK registered cars with the tax / MOT out of date. Can only guess about the insurance.

Stealing a plate, litterally taking one from a (probably) parked vehicle. Will take someone less time that it would to ring up a dodgy place to get a plate made.

All the best

Yes, stealing a plate would be easier but surely you have marked yourself.

The owner of the vehicle would report the plates stolen. The vehicle carrying the stolen plates would be pulled over as soon as it was seen.

If the plates were cloned, the 'true' owner of the plate would never know until they started getting fines through etc.

Hi

Very true, but then they can nick a new plate every couple of days at zero cost (especially if they are careful where they nick them from), unlike having to pay for some plates.

All the best

Yeah, good point, if you were changing them regulally enough. By the time the super efficent police service got the theft into there system you would be well away.

The only way they could get caught is anpr, then being pulled, and the bizzies checking the VIN or vehicle type if they have been daft enough to steal it from an obviously different vehicle.

To be honest, i'm behind anpr - it can catch all manner of criminals just because they're linked to a plate.

But thats the point. With the advent of the internet and sites like these, ebay, photo sites etc its so easy to find a simalar vehicle to the 'criminal' you'll be using.

Unless yopu were driving dangerously in sight of a police officer its very unlikely you are going to be pulled over.

If you clone a plate or steal one when the correct keeper contacts the police about the theft or the fact they have been niped for loads of stuff they have not done the details will be put into the anpr systems.
Won't be long before your caught and risk being arrested on suspicion of theft of the bike or plate or for perverting the course of justice, both of which will get you in more bother than speeding.

But its not just the NIP's is it. Its all sorts of stuff. It was mentioned above but if a plate was cloned rather than stolen the original ower would be none the wiser auntil something happened. It would be then up to them to try and prove their innocence as no doubt they'll be presumed guilty.

And in response to that, well, I'm not sure its true. Every day we hear countless stories of how the motorist is an easy target and is peanalised so. Fines, points, more fines, insurance premium increases etc.

Then we hear of someone like Docherty with enough drugs to get the entire population of Ireland stoned getting off with a 'community order' Rolling Eyes
