Hello, ive been working on my mates 125cc yamaha virago which he has neglected since owning it

He has never serviced it for over a year, same oil, plugs and filters since the last owner changed them Confused

he phoned me up because his bike wouldnt start at all and that he was hearing an odd noise from the engine whilst it was running.

i went down there on my H100 armed to the teeth with sockets, spanners and screwdrivers Smile not that i needed them all, 2 new plugs and it fired up.. just

I followed him to my house and the performance of his bike was awful and was chucking out some white smoke from one of the exhaust

its had new filters, oil, plugs, leads, caps and a battery charge. it starts easy now and runs. takes a while for it to rev up without choke tho.
I gave it a ride today, and it was awful. i dont think i got over 30mph? wouldnt get out of 3rd gear and i heard a small noise from the engine, not a knocking noise but a small grind every now and then?

I suspect low compression on one of the cylinders but who knows.

The carb was replaced when he got the bike as was the exhaust. Mabye the carb isnt set up properly?

Any ideas? Thanks, Richard

Theres a chance that one of the piston rings has broken, you just need a compression gauge to check it. If you can't get your hands on one then take the plugs out and put your thumb over the hole while turning the engine over, you 'might' be able to feel a difference. The gauge is better Laughing
