Any other ssid's are not picked up by the windows Wireless tool.

However when his laptop was next door it would find 2 other networks. But since being in our house its found only our ssid.

Sounds like its a compatability issue with the card and the router.
Have you tryed a card from one of the other PC's in the 1300?

Worth getting a card you know works in the 1300 before you decide which bit is actually playing up.

What router is it?

FWIW I had a problem with a Netgear wireless router. Got a cheap Belkin card for the other PC and the data rate was always slow/bad. Replaced with genuine Netgear PCI card and all was well.

So have you tried a netgear product in/on the dell laptop. Maybe the WPN511 PCMCIA card or even the USB dongle they do? In fact have you tried any other device on the suspect laptop?

Just my pennies worth.

I havn't tried any other components in the 1300. Because i dont have one really. I dont want to take the 6000 to bits cause im worried it might cause more problems than it solves.

On the other hand i decided to restore the defaults on the netgear router to see if any of my setting had thrown it out. Now it appears the connection is holding to this suspect laptop.

Would adding static ip addresses and setting up access control lists make that much of a difference?

I would source another network card for the 1300 and try that before you do anything else. Get a model that works in the other PC's if you can.
