so that's why most boarders can learn the basics in a few days, wheres to get to the level of parallel turns in skiing might take several weeks?

Skiing is harder to get to a competent level. Boarding is easier to learn enough to get about.

used to race when I was at uni, and did a lot of big mountain/off-piste stuff when I was the ski tech at Nevisport Glasgow.

was going several times a year, to the highlands, and at least once a year to the french alps. but that was a long time ago.. this is my first proper ski holiday for about 10 yrs.

While we're on the subject, has anyone been to the Xscape in Milton Keynes? Can novices just turn up and have a go?

You're right about the pain tolerance. I'll comment on the "skill" aspect when I finally meet someone on a board that actually has any Rolling Eyes

(Yes, I know they exist... exceptions prove the rule)

Great place, been twice. Might go again for a weekend in March (got some cheap flights to Salzberg already booked).

Check out the restaurant over the back of the mountain down a little track off the piste (don't worry, you get a lift back on a tow-rope from a skidoo).

i've also been a boarder, never a skier, wakeboard, snowboarding and kiteboarding and we've got an indoor slope with real snow but it's only like a blue run....gets a bit dull at times Rolling Eyes

No. You have to be competent to use the lift to just turn up and ski.

Quote:
A minimum standard applies to all recreational users - control your speed, link your turns and use the poma lift. If these are not met you will be asked to leave the slopes with no refund.

Otherwise you have to book a lesson with them. At this time of year you'll be well advised to book in advance either way as everyone and his dog is wanting to get a bit of practice in prior to their annual trip to the slopes.
