cg 125 - wot u think

well it appers to be the case that my dad cannot help towards my vrf 400 fund so its down to me to get a cheap bike and insure it.

now ive heard loads of good about cg 125's and i quite like the older modles as they look quite retro ive seen them being sold for about 300-400 quid and i got a few quotes off the net for around 350 quid insurance.

which adds up to 700 quid at the most, i can sell my scooter for 900+
which will allow me to pay for the bike in one go and save the other 600 quid to put towards a bigger bike wen i hit 18 in december and pay the insurance monthly.

so basicly what do you think of gc 125's and what should i look for when buying one?

Hi,

I bought my nearly new 2001 model for £875, so your estimate is good.

Basically check all the consumables, the brake shoes are important, you'll find that there are arrows on the brake lines that move when you apply the brakes, make sure they stop moving before the corresponding marker on the wheel, otherwise they need replacing (Which most people buy new wheels for instead I believe)

Check the engine oil, this wll give you some gauge as to how well it's been maintained.

Check for loose screws.

Too be honest you can't really go wrong, start the engine and check for knocking as well.

Great little bikes, just appreciate them for what they are, and speed machines they aint.

mine is a 97 model and does what it says on the tin.

bullet proof little buggers they are.

(i'll be selling mine in April for about 500 sheets if you still haven't got one by then!)

edit...and yes, they'll do about 65 flat out.

70 if you don't mind combining skydiving with biking...

Get a little Hongdou for about the same price as that, the crosser 125 has same engine as CG bulletproof some would say and cheap to insure. Iv got one cant wait to get it on the road

The CG125 is what I had before I passed my test, nice little bike, cheap and reliable, mine was only just a yr old when I got it, kept for four months then sold on

You dont have a full licence i gather?

CG125 is an excelent bike to start off with, but if your scooters a 2stroke you'll quite likely find it to be slower..

An nsr125 can be got for not much if you look carefully, they are quite a bit more pokey, handle propperly and stop when you want them to..

It all comes down to this...

How long will you be keeping it for?
How long can you wait to get it?

Haveing been there and done that i'd have an nsr if your keeping it long, but if your only makeing up the time for half a year a cg will do great and wont loose any money..

CG's are good solid little bikes. Solid and dependable , but probably not too much fun.If Good solid transports what You're looking for , You wont go wrong with a CG.

Def go for one there easy to fix and to learn how to ride. Ive had my 2002 model for about 4 months Sadly previous owner let it slip a bit on the service etc but i love it. It handles well even at high speed , Now its not a fast bike unlike the Nsr125 but it still will punt out a good 60mph, and higher depending on hills etc

Gets my vote 9/10

So your ok up to 33bhp??

Insureance will be prettymuch the same on any cheapo 250, which is unlikely to output more than 33bhp Theres looooads of old 250s hanging about and they aren't particarly expensive either..

I'd be looking down the larger bike route in that case, it cost me £250 to insure my cx500 at 20, £50 more than it cost me for the cg125..
For the cost of a cg you will get a gs500,cb500,cx500,cb400 allsorts of stuff.. imo you'd be nuts to be pootleing arround on a 125 when you could be paying the same for a larger bike... (not to mention cg125>gsxr=asking for trouble )

125's have their advantages but the step up from there to a 400 is worlds away
