Bit of a bitch here.

Have been checking out a few blogs recently on different sites and have come to the conclusion that the majority make me sick.

I am about to start a blog, but its only about a very specific subject and will only be read about by people in the same situation as myself, and hopefully will be useful to them.

General blogs it seems to me, are just a way for attention whores to let the world in general know about how interesting their lives are, how popular they are, how beautiful they are, how chocolate boxy they are or on the other hand how damn desperate their lives are. What is the point, if you want to write down your feelings, thoughts, etc, get a bloody diary and keep it private. If your life is so exciting, what are you doing spending ages on the computer composing your crap.

Rant over.

My wife's family is in New Zealand and blogging is a good way to keep everyone in touch with whats going on. It'll probably be more important when there are kids involved, with photos and vids etc, so to me and probably a few others its a good tool.

Not disparaging your rant, just pointing out the other side of the coin...

Smile

Good point - but wouldn't you all prefer it if it was private, especially if its got photos and videos on it ?

To be honest, if people are really that interested in looking at stuff that only really has relevance to family/friends, then I really don't care. Its just 'nice' for the older folk to just click on the site without having to log in, forget passwords etc etc (as a professional geek I keep IP logs and not one visitor outside family/friends has returned - lol - it really isn't interesting to people that don't know all involved)

Its just another form of communication for us, one that doesn't get lost in the endless spam fest that is e-mail these days.

Fair enough if its letting friends know whats happening.. but something weird if they can't be arsed to tell them whats going off.. maybe they just refer them to the website instead of haveing a conversation? bizzare..

For the main part its like friends reunited, lame ass nobends "ohh i just got married, i have a cat and twelve children and my husband/wife/gayliveinlover is the pope and the queen mixed into one, i have a degree in everything and a job that payes loads for strokeing supermodels nipples" Who gives a shit? if you gave a shit you'd still be talking to them, not crossing the street to avoid them (or swerveing to hit them) twarts..
/dissengageing rant...

I find them to be cool and interesting, provided the subject is interesting and/or you know the person who's writing it.

Personally I'm keeping up with Kaben's blog (www.thegentlemanthief.blogspot.com) as he's touring around China, and it's damn interesting.

But blogs which people put up just giving an overview of their sordid lives, for no reason other than for people to stumble upon during a Google sesh, are sad, pathetic, and very annoying.

I enjoy reading peoples blogs if I know them, otherwise the only one I've enjoyed was from a bloke in new orleans when it flooded as he updated it once or twice a day with the goings on as they happened, pretty cool. If you don't know the person then likely hood is you'll hate the damn thing, personally if I did one it'd just be full of insults aimed at people I know so also useless to people that don't know me but they can go fuck themselves anyway.

I have a blog, and unless you know me, or wanted to read any of the geeky bits of it, the whole thing would be completely boring to you.

First of all, I write it for myself. It's nice to go back and read bits of it at times. Secondly, I write it for my friends and family, as it allows them to keep up with what's happening in my life without me needing to send loads of emails or spend hours on the phone.

I don't write it for the general public to read, and if they did, I doubt they'd come back for a second visit.

I don't see a problem with that.

Yes, they're boring and mundane but unless you know the person then the likelyhood of you reading it is fairly minimal unless the content is really stimulating (or you think that they have an inferior life to you and you wanna feel good about yourself Wink ).

It's not like you're reading a professionally written manuscipt is it?

For the individual it's nice to keep a record of what's going on in your life and Suzuki's right, it's nice to look back on every now and again.

A BLOG is a diary for the 21st century - In fact I bet Buck Rogers kept one so it can't be that nerdy. Can it Confused ?

i keep/kept a blog and wrote it just for the fun of writing random crap.

anyway, i get invited to a 'blog picnic' in regents park last summer.

what to do? do i stay at home and keep my mild 'hollywood' image of my fellow bloggers or do i go along and find out that in fact, these people whose lives i'd tracked carefully for a fairly long time, were in fact complete geeks?

hmm..what to do...a slight hangover didn't help either...and counterstrike was looking inviting...

so i went down the offy, got myself a hearty six pack and a bottle of wine and went to find them.

to cut it short, yes they wre geeky. and nice in equal measures. One bloke whose blog i like was a nice fella and might be meeting up with him for more beers.

result then.

One of the lady bloggers (overweight unfortunately) was, and i quote, 'likely to blow pole.'

so there you are. a day of trepidation, revelation and a potential head job in the lavs.

what literature was invented for. innit.
