Linksys WiFi problem.

I've had a problem with my Linksys WAG54G and WAP54G having low signal strengths and only being able to connect to the WAG so no roaming capabilities.

I'm using a broadcom 802.11b mini pci card.

As Linksys advised I had the same SSID for both AP's the idea being the laptop would skip between AP's depending on which signal was the stronger. I found this didn't work and the laptop never connected to the WAP, I could never work out why and still can't.

I've changed the SSID on the WAP and now everything is fine. The signal strength is always excellant now on both AP's although I have to skip manually between them when roaming.

So where was I going wrong and whats the problem?

I dont like linksys stuff, I have to reset my router every day because it simply refuses to connect to it on random occasions. Sorry that doesnt help.

Maybe not but I might be able to help you.

Most of the Linksys routers have a 3 year warranty. Had to return the WAP54G recently and Linksys are very easy with their warranty returns.

Hi,

I can't see two routers broadcasting the same SSID being a good idea. Mind you, Linksys probably know a vast amount more than me.

They do show up as seperate AP's on Netstumbler and I can see why Linksys recommend this but I do agree with you.

How big is big? I can pick up my wireless connection from half way down the street...

Agreed, maybe you should look at some of the buffalo wireless stuff, its a lot higher powered / better aerials than you average home stuff.

Also what laptop is it??

Problem is with that Linksys kit (like mine...) you can't plug in an external aerial or swap the standard one.

Thankfully my house is small but it doesn't help having to have the router under the stairs.

are your wireless devices set to connect to non-preffered networks? also are your WAG & WAP on the same channel? think you may need to put them on different channels.

i use a linksys WAG and also a 3com WAP and have them set with unique SSIDs but 1 on channel 1 and the other on channel 13 and it works fine for me.

No 2nd broadcast with a cable running to it.

WAG in the loft, 3 floors with the wap in the middle. Solid concrete block internal walls everywhere, no internal studding except cupboards.

I live on the edge of the city of London and can pick up over 40 WiFi networks from my house. On a clear day the number of networks gets silly as I can even pick up signals from the City.

You may be able to pick up your signal half way down the street but I live in a very busy 2.4G area so suffer from congestion. I can pick up my signal down the street at 1MB only speeds

I think you also miss the point. The system is now working perfectly but I have to manually flip between AP's. If the SSID's are the same it cuts the signal by between 30-90%. I want to know why it didn't work as it should.

Gericom laptop, broadcom card runing Dell Trumobile software and an external 5db antenna and an internal antenna. Trust me the laptop isn't the problem.

You can on the WAP.

Ive said it once, i'll say it again. Wireless is useless! I snapped the last aerial off the back of my PC in rage (classic!) but it probably wasnt the brightest thing to do. I say stick with good old fasioned wired network, just buy a 200m cable and trail it around with you Laughing
