Help learn about climate change:

It is reported today on BBC news, basically the weather centre is fed up of waiting 6months for one model to be complete so they are using spare processing power on users pcs to do the number crunching for them. They are aiming to increase the quality of their predictions by running lots of models.

I am running an Athlon64 3000+ so Im happy to take part. The max temperature of the cpu gets to about 49 degrees C at most.

There will be a show on BBC4 in may with the results for those who are interested.

As long as people are put in jail for not having a TV licence, the BBC can fvck right off.

My spare CPU cycles go to proper research, not funding something I've already paid for.

I used to use Seti (https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/) about 5-6 years ago but haven't since then.

I used to use that folding @home, and would usually leave it running overnight whenever I was downloading; only one night I came down and the computer wasn't working anymore. So I stopped.

I see. Blame the life-saving software and not the porn/warez. I can see how that could happen.

Folding at home never caused any of my machines to die. Been playing with it for just over a year 24/7 on five boards. Lucky me I know Mr. Green

Isn't leaving your pc on all the time going to contribute to global warming?

I may do it, used to use seti also.

Apparently turning your pc on and off everyday uses more electricity and isn't very good for the parts, never seen any proof but i've had my pc on just about every day for the last 3 years (since i built it) and rarely turn it off, restart it occasionally and sometimes turn it off over night but apart from that never had a problem.

Or if you want something else maybe this one

https://www.chem.ox.ac.uk/curecancer.html

"Anyone, anywhere with access to a personal computer, could help find a cure for cancer by giving 'screensaver time' from their computers to the world's largest ever computational project, which will screen 3.5 billion molecules for cancer-fighting potential.

The project is being carried out by Oxford University's Centre for Computational Drug Discovery - a unique 'virtual centre' funded by the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR), which is based in the Department of Chemistry and linked with international research groups via the worldwide web - in collaboration with United Devices, a US-based distributed computing technology company, and Intel, who are sponsoring the project."

Seeing as I think it's 1 in 3 of us will get cancer in our lifetimes maybe it's worth a shot?

Ditto. I also recruited some colleague's machines into the effort (I hope they don't notice Angelic)

I also do folding at home. A much more worthwhile cause in my opinion.

My very first thought on the subject. Thumbs Up

BBC are a classical case of the outdated-yet still rake it in-has the country by the balls-send up.

For all of us that have sky, with independant channels with a fraction of the BBC's budget, that still churn out original shows I think its an outrage that one corporation still has the right to claim the airwaves. I have sky+, I dont even use a terresteial arial, I dont watch the BBC becuase its mainly a load of shite. So why should I pay those fat bastards such an extortionate amount a year?

One of my good friends (a mental guy called swill Thumbs Up ) has never had a TV. He keeps getting letters saying he is going to be served with a warrant to search his house because he has never paid a licence fee. They are so up their fucking arses that they dont realise some people might have more brains thatn to watch dancing on ice. He normaly fills the return envelope with junk mail, he sometimes sends it back with a note that says 'Your days are numbered'.

BBC = Pretentious arseholes, I tend to think swill is right.

Wink
