Just had a bit of good/bad news that the 100cc Peugot Speedfight that I had nicked 18months ago has been recovered in Staffordshire (I live in London).

I had shitty insurance that didnt pay out so its all mine but its got £150 recovery charge, no ignition, half the faring gone, broken mirror- garage cant tell if the engine works but say that and the wheels etc look alright and only an extra 1000 miles (7,700 total) on it from when I had it, so hopefully all superficial stuff but will need to hire a van to get it down to London to fix up.

So my dilemma is will it cost more to recover and fix up than just getting a new bike (its worth about £600 when I got it)- anyone have any idea how much it would cost for new ignition and faring or anyone out there interested in buying the log book and stuff off me so you can pick it up for yourself?

I'd say don't bother.. by the time you pay the £150 recovery fee, £100 to rent van, £50 diesel depending how far it is, then you add up all the parts you need to make it sellable again and it's just going to cost you more than it's worth.

They said the same when my Senda SM125 was recovered, "Yeah mate, looks fine".

Well, it wasn't. Forks were bent, plastics had been painted (with matt emulsion) a different colour, rear tyre was chewed up where they'd been doing burnouts, headlight was broken, handlebars were bent and the rear number plate bracket and all the brake lights and indicators were missing. Would of cost £2400 to get it back to how it looked, so it just wasn't even worth trying.

Dare say that scoot probably isn't far off that, the garage just probably wants to get rid of it.

Got told by the police that my Z200 looked fine, no obvious signs of damage....

ignition smashed out, chain snapped, exhaust broken.

Don't forget that if you decide you don't want the bike and choose to leave it you are still liable for the £150 recovery charge, because the bike is still technically your property and you are still liable for the costs that the bike incurs.

Do the bare minimum repairs in London to make it safe to ride, and ride it back. Get breakdown cover for just that day or week. It will work out cheaper than recovery and repair.

Get a price to ship it one way to London on a pallet, it might be cheaper than hiring a van and putting your own fuel in, also saves you wasting a day travelling.

How much is it worth now ? it's going to cost you the £150 anyway unless the garage will take the bike as payment and you can call it quits ?
