There is a GSXR400 sitting in my mechanics garage and it's been there for quite a while.

Not sure what year it is.

All of the bodywork seems to be intact (it's in pieces but I dont think they're scratched.

46,000 miles on the clock.

It doesn't run at the minute because it needs a new CDI, which I'm told costs about £300 new but other than that it's meant to be mechanically sound.

I've been thinking since it hasnt been running for near a year I might be able to give him an offer for it and get it reasonably cheap because I wouldn't mind paying for a new CDI.

What would you pay for it?

Offer him 2 or 3 hundred. Is that miles or KMs?

Thats quite high mileage, and if it doesn't run, plus needs some parts then why not make him an offer. Even a low one, he might just want rid and sell it to you cheap.

I've had two GSXR400s and loved them, but I'd be a bit worried about the mileage. Haggle him down and you could get yourself a bargain.

I had one too. My engine developed serious problems about the 20k mark. I've heard a few people say that's a problem with quite a lot of them. It's quite likely that the engine will be knackered with that mileage. You're probably talking £300-500 for a spare engine. So £300 for a bust bike will still be a bargain, they're good bikes.

Is there much you could do to it to help prevent it blowing up?

Would new pistons and rings help?

Will ask him about it soon and with any luck I'll have £300 to make an offer with.

Just hope he wants to sell it Neutral

I've never heard of one not needing engine attention after 20k.

And to the fact that it's high mileage, rarer than the zxr's and vfr's, parts will be harder to obtain etc etc. Look nice it may but I'd not bother at all.

Find out which model it is, as you may find a CDI very hard to come by.

Hey, it depends on what model it is, the GK76A is the newest model with the single headlight unit, if its this model go for it, anything earlier and getting the parts go from extremely hard to get to damn near impossible, Thumbs Up Dan

You can get cdi's for about £50 from breakers, i had 4. Parts aren't too bad but you will have to look. I bought mine and it was an absolute money pit. I would also be a bit worried about that kind of milage on a bike that old. Thumbs Up

I'm pretty sure it has a single light.

Went down today and asked about it. He told me the owner hadn't came back to him in about 6 months about it and he would try and get in contact with him.

Since he hasnt asked about it in 6 months don't think he's too worried about it. Thinking

Mark: How do you mean it was a money pit, what sort of things happened to it?

Came across this. That your bike? https://visumod.freeshell.org/cgi-bin/pic_show.pl?/allbikes/guestpics/469.jpg

Yeh, where did you get that picture? Thought i lost all the pics of it.

Basically the forks went, negative connection to the frame was dodgy so blew the cdi a few times, also the alternator and rectifier kept going, the engine was fine just the electrics were a joke. Bike cost £1700 and i spent £1300 on fixing it then sold it for £400.

Spent alot of money on labour, probably could have done with a new loom and would have sorted it but it really put me off 400's. Rather get a newer bike now like i did with my 600. Thumbs Up

There's one that always sits in Rathcoole, got aftermarket stickers on so I'd imagine its been down the road before.
