I want to take up running as a hobby, and to get more active. I've done some research as to how to start out as i'm lazy and haven't really exercised since i left school nearly 3 years ago , but i need some more info which i cant seem to find anywhere.
How can i prevent blisters? My feet blister very easily and fast, as well as the blisters being huge (i'm talking bigger than a 50p piece almost every time). It doesn't matter what shoes or socks i'm wearing, whether i'm walking or jogging etc. I just suffer from them.
Any of you fitness type people got any ideas or tricks for me? Or should i take the boring, expensive route and join the gym ____________________ "One moment can change a day, one day can change a life and one life can change the world." Siddhartha Gautama |

Place feet in piss, hardens them right up
Only wear cotton socks, avoid nylon at all costs
Wear older trainers, not brand new from shop ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

well fitting shoes and doing a lot of it so that your feet slowly begin to harden up,
i had the same thing when i take a break from rowing for a while my hands go soft, though after a while they start calousing up which stops the blisters

Take up swimming instead? Much easier on the feet, plus you can lark about when you get inevitably fed up of being sensible |

f*cking lazy puff Just kidding...I'm sure your not a puff
If you want to go running then go running outside, its far more healthy getting the fresh air and sunshine on your skin and its an opportunity to take in some nice scenery. Throw in a few sprints and you soon burn more calories than you would on a cross trainer. Don't get me wrong, the gyms good if you want to bulk up or loose a few pounds, but spending hours on a treadmill or cycling machine is fucking ludicrous. Spending hard earned cash to literally go nowhere
When I started running I was recommended to go to a specialist running shop where they will measure your feet and check for what type of running step (or gait) you have. Basically people have a tendency to pronate, overpronate or to supinate (check here https://www.runnersworld.ltd.uk/pronation.htm)
Once they have done this they can sort you out with trainers which will correct your running style and prevent future injuries.
If however, like me, a tight scottish git, then I opted for a good pair of nike running shoes which were half price. Touch wood I've run over 300 mile in them with no injuries or problems. If you do choose just to buy generic running shoes then make sure they are proper running shoes and not fashion trainers, squash trainers, cross trainers or any other type of trainer! Running shoes is what you need! Also buy them between 1/2 and 1 size to big as your feet swell over a distance and shoes that are tight to start with will become painfully tight during a run and lead to injury.
Ok, as for the blisters there is a few things I can think of. First is a good pair of trainers and some decent sports socks. A trick I got shown for marching in the army is to massage some vaseline into your feet prior to putting your socks on. This causes less friction between your sock and your foot. Other than that I think if you run through them the skin should eventually toughen up.
Other methods include running along the beach barefoot (the sand will toughen your feet), doing martial arts (these tend to be barefooted so your feet toughen up quite quickly) or, as mentioned earlier, pee on them when your in the shower (I can't vouch for this one )
If you want to get the most out from your running then joining a running club could be beneficial. A ex-para told me he got more fitness from joining a running club than he did whilst serving in the army!
Anyway I hope this helps! |

As said get down to a professional running shop. If you dont have the chance to soon then the great North Run has an awesome tread checking machine which I am guessing most here are pointing to. Checks your gait and the way your foot pronates and then picks out a perfect shoe for you. Although being £25 for the test in most places the trainers are awesome my dad has said.
He has done the New Balance one in New York before the NYC Marathon, and buys the reccomended trainers every time he needs new ones.
I have just had a foot infection and the ball of my foot needs rebuilding, from not being able to be walked on up to at least Half marathon state.
I also found these -https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Thorlos-Lite-Running-Socks-Mens-mini-crew-UK-10-11_W0QQitemZ7218740920QQcategoryZ109165QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem- socks to be awesome on my first Great North Run.
As Robby said until you get into the running a good fitness builder is a Cross trainer and in a Mens Fitness article last week it said that this was the number one way to lose calories. but obviously that isnt gonna be a help if you want to start running as a hobby! ____________________ 05 ZX10R, (**05 WKR) |

As said in some of the above threads buy a good pair of trainers, if you can go to a specialist running shop all the better. You'll get sound advice from experts who won't just try and sell you a 90 quid pair of shoes purely to get the cash out of you.
Places like Easy Runner in Bristol will actually examine your running gait to ascertain which shoe is best suited for your particular action. In saying this it might be wise to just invest in a relatively cheap pair of cross trainers if you're not willing to pay out too much in view of the fact that you're only gonna give it a go to see if you enjoy the hobby.
Decent gear is a must as feeling uncomfortable whilst running is no help when you're feeling absolutely shattered as well.
Don't wear 2 pairs of socks, they will cause your feet to sweat too much and you'll consequently feel uncomfortable during your run and probably have to endure blisters anyway once the rubbing inevitably starts. A good pair will wick away moisture whilst protecting your feet and I certainly found that a tenner spent on a decent pair is well worth the outlay. Personally I find 'Twin Skin' style socks still gave my foot too much movement. I use 'Thorlo' running socks and find them to be fantastic at foot protection you can buy them here along with other items products designed specifically for running.

As to everyone else, thanks very much for the advice! I'm going to look into my nearest running shop and see what i can get from there, as well as trying all the methods for preventing blisters, i.e. 2 pairs of socks etc (Steve H, i know you said not to but i'm willing to try anything)
Next question: Do you guys know of any brand/ knee support bandage-thingys which actually work? My left knee has a thing about dislocating where i walk funny from my flat foot, and it's cracked in half where i fell once when it dislocated.
I know it seems like i'm trying to punish myself here but i just want to try something new because i've never managed it before ____________________ "One moment can change a day, one day can change a life and one life can change the world." Siddhartha Gautama
