Hi there does anyone have any ideas why i get a weird clicking from the front brake when i apply the lever? I can feel it as well as hear it. It only started the other day after i had to emergency stop after a dog ran in the road!

Cheers,

Dean

Hi

Steering head bearings, fork bushes or the calipers allow the pads to move. Also possible the brake caliper mounts have broken, which is unlikely but serious.

All the best

went out and had a quick look, and nothing stands out, checked the pads and they still look as fresh as they did when i put them in a month ago. i'll have to see how it goes, i wonder if it is the forks as one side is leaking

Had a similar thing on the Blade. A slight knocking noise with a slight tap through the clippons. Dad said he could barely notice it but agreed it was there. He'd felt a lot worse and was hardly anything to worry about for a while.

Not good enough for me though. After changed the callipers and pads, it still did it. I had the front end completely stripped and rebuilt; cleaned, new bushes, new bearings, new seals, Ohlins springs and oil.

Doesn't do it anymore.

Shocked that would cost more than the bike itself lol

Most of that was under my list of wanted parts (my winter restoration/modification project (well apart from the fork bushes/bearings)) - I would have stripped and cleaned the forks anyway.

Bushes and bearings weren't too expensive, might be cheaper for the Bros (try David Silvers). Seals were bought at the same time as I thought 'what the heck, might as well'.

just sounds like your head bearings are loose just tighten them up. just do it a centremetre at a time and re check it.
has it got clip ons or normal bars

I've got the seals and dust caps sitting here, i'll be doing it at the weekend; seeing as all the front end is going to come out to do it i can make sure its all tight etc. when it goes back in.

Thanks for the help guys

try taking out the clip on bolts and cleaning them up and put a litle bit of copper grase on them and stick them back in, (mind out the manufacturers normaly thread lock them in so if they dont move leave them well alone)

Good point, should have included this check in my list. Tightening mine didn't rectify the problem though.

I've had exactly this problem. New head bearings made a difference but I still have a faint click feel when breaking. Changed bushes, seals etc didn't do much.

I think it could be that the pads have a tiny amount of movement within there mounting so it's just the pad clicking against the rod that holds them in (maybe).

Find some way of keeping the bike still, then try your hardest to move the front wheel forwards and backwards. If it moves, and the forks wobble, then it's probably your bearings. The force of the stop has probably just loosened them.

By the way, is it just one click, or a succession of clicks while slowing down with the brake on?

I had this on a ducati once. The piston had jammed in one of the calipers and it was hitting teh brake pad at an angle.

The ticking was the bolts on the brake disc hitting the angled edge of the brake pad Shocked

If you can feel it through the lever it might mean you have a warped front disc (I'm currently fixing this problem in my Supermoto)

Is this like a dull thumping feeling/sound when you front brake?

i'd agree with kickstart going with steering head bearings. my bike had it- and i could "click" it by pushin alongside it and braking hard. all i did was take a cover off near my clocks to get access and then lightly hammer a flat screwdriver to tighten it! worked a treat Thumbs Up
just don't overtighten it! Rolling Eyes

stick the bike on it's centre or side stand and have someone hold the bike so the front wheels off the ground (or what I do is just jack the front up on the bottom of the engine on it's sidestand - plenty sturdy on mine), and grab the front forks and wiggle (I say wiggle more like shake the thing to death), you should be looking at the bottom of the headstock where you can see it rotates inside it. Hard to explain without just pointing to it, often easier with 3 people until you've done it once one to hodl the bike one to shake the forks one to look for movement. If it moves the head bearings need tightening.
