Hi,

They heat up quicker so you dont die of old age waiting for tose old ring things to get warm Very Happy

I have Gas I am so bad with electric I set the cooker on fire Embarassed

Electric hobs are now available with the following heating zones or plates:

Induction – This is a new feature in which an induction coil is used. Its advantages include, energy saving, increased speed of heating and safety. A magnetic field is used to heat the pan only and thus only gets hot from it contact with the pan. Keep in mind that specific pans may be required.

Solid Plate – These electric sealed plates have been in use longer than their counterparts. These are generally slower than other options available. Plates containing a red dot are slightly faster which you might find useful.

Halogen zones - Halogen tubes respond immediately after the hob is switched on. Cooling of this type of hob is considerably quicker than other methods.

Quick-light zones – This method is considerably quicker than solid plates and also heats up the glass quicker than halogen lamps

Flat hobs are ok (won't say good, as i'm no expert) only if you've got decent pans with solid flat bases.

Had a halogen thingy at uni with a set of bashed up 1970's pans. Didn't work at all......

Hi,

cagaiva gezzer has a good point there each different sort of Hob is only suitable for certain pans. Halogon hobs are ok with stainless steel type pans.

Blimey I never even thought of pans, thats complicating it even further.

Do the Halogen hobs react as quick as gas??

Hi,

Not as quick as gas by a long way but not really awful, they are better at heating up than cooling down. I struggle when using a halagon over a gas hob but I am sure you get use to it Confused

I have never used a induction hob...

I guess your budget will play a part in it as well, faster = more money.

C

I have a halogen hob and I like it.

As I don't have any gas in my kitchen, electric was the only option really.

My old cooker had ordinary electric rings and although it was OK to cook on it was a bastard to keep clean cos any overspill or drippage or spillage used to get down underneath them.

I don't like the solid electric hobs cos I think they look awful, they take quite a while to heat up and they take forever to cool down again.

I like my halogens because they are much quicker than standard electric to heat up and cool down, and they are dead easy to clean being a flat surface, you just wipe them with a cloth or kitchen roll after use & I usually use the proper cream cleaner once a week or so.

Main disadvantage (please don't laugh) is that being a flat surface my cats think they are just an extension of the worksurface and tend to walk across them or even sleep on them when I'm not looking! Laughing

Not had any problems with rough pan surfaces, and some of my pans are probably older than some of the people who post on here.... Wink

And which is safer when your potatoes boil over (and put the flame out leaving the gas filling your kitchen)? Razz

I would debate the point of a gas hob being hotter than an electric one too from personal experience, depending on type. Gas certainly does reach cooking temp quicker (but you're literally talking seconds these days) and it starts to cool immediately you switch it off which makes it more controllable. But for actual heat during cooking it's all much the same because it depends what setting you have the knob on surely!

It's a matter of personal taste and practicality. Like I said, gas wasn't an option for me as I had no supply into my kitchen so would have had to have a fitter in to sort that out first. Even if it had been I would have probably stuck with the electric as that's what I've had for the last 20 years in my various homes. With a lot of animals and small children about the place I was always a bit wary of having the naked flame about the place.

If I had gas as an option, I wouldn't consider anything else.

Gas is better than ANYTHING else.
