Just wondered what comments were on the new(ish) Think! campaign to get car drivers to take longer to look for bikes.

DoT link here

The "how close" advert is here (mpg file).
"Don't Take It In audio mp3 (radio advert?) is here.
There are also 2 posters, one aimed at drivers, the other at urban bikers, for outside garages. Have a look here and here.

If this question posted before let me know the link. Thanks.

Thumbs Up

FWIW the older advert mpg file 'perfect day" is here. For some reason that one always made me smile Wink

I saw another one yesterday, on the side of a bus. I don't think it's made by Think! but it's a good advert nonetheless.

Very simple:

Observation
Signal
Motorcycle?

Its good to see someone taking an interest in our safety but how many people are really going to do things differently?

Everyone believes they are the perfect driver.

if one person is a bit more careful on the road, and one less person dies as a result, its probably worth it

In conjunction with the how close advert, if i wasnt paying full attention i might of been injured today, 3 cars pulling out without looking in my direction all in the space of an hour, it just makes me think do the adverts realy get through to cagers?

Plenty bikers find it all-to easy to blame cagers for everything. I do see your point though, the one accident i've been in is because the driver "didn't see me".

I think the only way most drivers will learn is by being in an accident with a bike, or owning one themselves. I sure as hell wouldn't be so observant unless i owned a bike.

Thumbs Up Spot on Jack. I wrote this on another forum I frequent at the beginning of Feb:

Quote:
It's funny, I've been doing a bit of an off-the-cuff survey about the reactions of people I know who've seen the ad in the last couple of days.

Almost without exception, anyone who has been involved in a road accident (rider or driver) has been deeply affected by it and insists that they already do make careful observations for bikes (5). Anyone who has never been involved in an accident has dismissed it, either said yes they'd seen it and didn't really take it in or yes it was effective but that would never happen to them. (9)

So it would appear that first-hand experience of an accident really is the only true way to educate people. Not good, huh?

(PS It brought tears to my eyes cos in the first bit where the bike hits the car it made "that" noise, and brought it all back........)

Its flawed as the bike seems to drop out of no where at an odd angle ( as if from pavement) when the car pulls out...

where as in the wider angle when the car driver first looks you can see no headlight, later on when the bike pootles past safely its going alot slower and can be seen really far away...

I don't like it personally.

there is a better one on the radio

goes along the lines of :

look at your watch,
now tell me the time,
did you look at your watch again?

Would you need to do the same at a junction....

I agree with you there Simple, there's no way you can see the bike in the first clip.

I find the radio advert ironic - most people will hear it in their cars, where it will most likely have the unintended effect of distracting the driver's attention from the road.

You’re making it out as if they have no idea what their on about, or that because it doesn’t represent an accurate reconstruction of a bike crash, its no good.
Fu*k that mate.
I’ve hit a car doing a considerable speed and the reasons for doing so is the old look both ways and pull out of the second look thing, and yes, it does make that noise, I had flash backs from it for a few weeks after.

The advert shows a driver being a bit less than observant, he makes a quick judgement then some biker smashes into the car. Weather it looks wrong to you is irrelevant, it’s just to tell people to watch out. Rolling Eyes

You're not the only one to have crashed on here,

The advert is poorly made, anyone could pick it apart, we all know what it's trying to achieve

when you hit the car did you drop out of the sky too?

were you pulling off the pavement?

I know the noises are accurate - ish but the way its shopped together isnt very good.

Laughing Poorly made Rolling Eyes

That still isn’t the point, I know I’m not the only one who’s crashed on here FFS I was simply pointing out that I would rather see a mock up situation than watching a real video of it happening to a biker just for the purpose of an advert.
From the drivers perspective it is pretty scary, the normal road situation and then the massive whack on the car and then the look of “What the fu*k do I do now?!” kind of thing should hit home to some people.

Meh,

Whatever the 'Ad' contains, it won't work as the people it's aimed at are ignorant a-holes anyway

Yeah, the likes of you and me know that, you can’t do anything about it though.

I just didn’t see why you were arguing against the advert which is just put out in a bid to safe a few people.

I do think that it helps some drivers remember that there are bikers out there.

At the point that the car driver got to the junction, he would have been thinking "Check for cars", as we are so relativly small in numbers.

At least for a while, some people will think of bikers.

IN fact! Ive just rememberd there was an advert on in the cinema about bike awareness, about halfway through the lights came on, and a man came into the cinema hall. He asked if a Mrs XXXX was here, to which a woman in the front row said that it was her.

The man asked the woman to come with him please, and she started getting arsy saying that shed paid for her ticket and wasnt going anywhere.

The man then spoke to her quietly, and you could hear a police radio going off round the corner. The woman then burst into tears, and started shouting, i told him not to get that stupid bike!

They then escorted the woman out, and i was left a bit shocked. About ten seconds later the man came back in again, and explained to everyone that the woman was an actor, but the situation is one that happens all too often. He then asked us to all drive home safely, and the bike awareness advert was played again....

That was about 5 years ago now i think but it only seems relevant now that i ride.

I didnt notice the vid was poorly made until pointed out. I think most car drivers would not notice this either.

If the advert makes 1 person think for a week that is better than none at all. It could save the life of one biker.

i think those Think! ads are alright. it doesn't matter how well they are put together, they are put together well enough and thats what matters. they always make me stop and think for a few moments, and im sure its the same for most other people.

the radio ad is really good though Thumbs Up

i like the ad in some ways, it makes people jump. but sadly i doubt it will do much diffrence to how people drive, i was pulled out on 4 time inside half an hour yesterday (think thats my new record).
think we just have to take more care when it come to car drivers as they are generally thick when it comes to bikes.

I don't think the adverts work.... why? because the level of driving I see out there is terrible. People not looking when pulling out, people no looking when changing lane/direction, people no obeying lines, esp on islands, people no indicating.... and to a less a point, drivers who are over hesitant.. I'm always weary of those types.

I talked to people at work about the look twice advert. They thought it was stupid as the bike isn't there in the first shot, and apparently going alot faster than the second shot.

I agree, it reduces the credibility of the advert, and only reinforces the "pah! that'll never happen" attitude. I hope it has an impact, i really do. I just don't think it will.

i am 42 tears old bought my first bike new in '84 an rd 200 yam.had it 8 months got hit by a car pulling out of a junction - result - broken leg, broken arm, punctured lung,5 broken ribs cuts & bruises & a written off bike.
3 years later i got another bike rd 500 lc yam had it 6 months got hit by a car pulling out of a junction - result - cuts & bruises & a very fucked bike.
gave up motorcycling until 2005 did direct access & bought a vstar 1100 classic brand spanking new.no accidents as yet but am extremely cautious when approaching junctions.
i reckon any adverts which draw attention to motorcycle safety is a good thing, there should be more posters on buses etc.but saying that, anticipation by us lot & correct road positioning would help.
sorry to ramble on Very Happy
