Anyone read this book? By Andy Nicholls...

'tis about football violence in Liverpool from the 70's onwards.

I am in no way a football fan (Can't stand the sport) but found it a compelling read.

A lot of interesting points are made, such as the opinion that football hooligans are basically "Consenting lads that meet up to have a fight", and that it is wrong to stop them from doing what they all are willing to do.

Do you agree? (Forget about property damage and the innocents that may get dragged in)

You can't forget about those though, because they're the exact reason that football hooliganism had to stop.

If they were just consenting lads who wanted to have a fight, they should have joined boxing clubs, or started their own underground street fighting clubs.

We need another Somme/Verdun/Ypres. That would fulfil the above objectives. Thumbs Up

Pretty much, no. Yet the fact that people should be allowed to fight each other if they want to, does seem like a form of free speech. There's also the fact that personally, if all these thugs want to try and kill each other off away from normal society, I have no problem with it. The problem arises when other people or their property gets damaged, or when people associate it with football itself. Somewhat similar to saying that if bikers fight each other at a meet, then all bikers must be thugs.

Have read a few of these books in my time. Scally came across as being written by a bloke who needed to justify himself. Some of the violence was simply horrific, and the way he glorifies it just added to my opinion of his own need for approval and/or admiration. The book read more like a hollywood film than a documentary or insight into the world of holliganism.

The last book I read on this subject was "Barmy Army: The Changing Face of Football Violence by Dougie Brimson ". I found this to be more objective towards the reasons behind violence at football, and the author seemed a lot more honest in his description of events. He seemed to be slightly remorseful, but acknowledged that he would probably do the same things again as a young man.

Personally, I'm a huge football fan, and find the fact that people try to ruin "my" game through violence to be abhorrent. I've only ever seen crowd trouble at one game in my sheltered 20odd years of going to live matches. I've seen more potential for trouble at small non-league games than at higher standard ones, but these problems are not really any different from those encountered in an average high street.

We used to when rival bike clubs bumped into each other unexpectedly,
sometimes even prearranged if there was a problem to be sorted.

Some Bike clubs still don't get on due to grudges decades old!

And to be perfectly honest most of the bikers i know, including myself have no problem if people wish to think of us as thugs . (not to be confused with motorcyclists)
