fork stanchion restoration

Hi,

Just looking for some advice.

My forks are okay, however the fork stanchions (ie the fork legs) are quite badly pitted.

I've tried autosol on them with no joy.

Can anyone recommend anything or know of somewhere that could repair.

I've tried hammorite, but it does not look good at all.

Looks like they are lacquered over machined metal. The laquer is perforated so no amount of autosol is going to save you, and hammerite does indeed look rubbish.

If the pitting is not too bad, you can use paintstripper to remove the reminants of the laquer, then you'll need to use sandpaper to remove the pitted metal and re-produce the finish. If the pitting is bad, you may have trouble getting rid of all signs of it.

The easier way is to just sand it all back and coat it in silver paint. Both alternatives made much easier by removing and dismantling the forks, if you can be bothered.

Unfortuantely it's one of those seemingly simple things that can take a lot of effort to sort out (see also slightly pitted wheels)
