 |
|
Ok, The injections I had before my tooth was extracted are starting to wear off now and my jaw feels quite sore. I'm not sure if the pain is where the injections went in, where the tooth was pulled from or where the dentist had hold of me. Whichever it is its not nice.
Whats in the injection they give you?? I'd kill for another one right now.. |

It is a local anaesthetic such as lignocaine but sometimes a different one such as procaine or cinchocaine. There is often a little adrenaline in with it that constricts the blood vessels around the injection site with the effect that the local anaesthetic lasts longer.
These types of local stop nerve impulses travelling along the nerves (by blocking voltage gated calcium channels which prevents propogation of an action potential if you want to be complex).
I would say the discomfort is a combination of the fact that a volume of liquid (the local anaesthetic) has been injected into the soft tissues causing localised swelling, the direct trauma caused by the procedure and possibly indirect trauma caused by the pressure the dentist had to use in pulling the tooth.
Removal of a tooth causes a lot of tissue damage, it is going to be sore. Take some paracetamol/ibuprofen. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Well I can tell you this. I would not allow a dentist to gas me down. The only circumstances under which I would allow a general anaesthetic to be administered to me is under the direct supervision of a fully qualified anaesthetist. I wouldn't even take teeth out of a cat under general without intubating it first to protect the airway, and cats are a hell of a lot better at protecting their airway than humans.
I would rather have the tooth pulled with no anaesthetic than not wake up afterwards.
On another subject. What you will find is that to remove bottom teeth, they only have to give one injection because you can put the local directly onto the nerve that covers the whole bottom jaw. With top teeth they have to infiltrate round the tooth which takes several injections. If the dentist is good at what they do, you will not see or feel the needle. I know this because my mum is a dentist who specialises in mentally handicapped kids, I have seen her work and they walk out without realising they have had an injection. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink.
