What's wrong with the good old-fashion method...

Boil the kettle, poor it into your ear then tip your head to one side to discharge the water and wax Razz

Don't try this at home - in fact, don't try this at all!

Of course, back in my day, it was hot Olive Oil and a plug of cotton wool that was supposed to do the trick. Or, even more dangerous, dig out the wax with a hairpin Shocked (don't try this method at all either Sad )

Neither of these methods work. They just hurt Sad

If I remember rightly, The hot olive oil method was actually more often used to relieve earache. Put the bottle of olive oil in a bowl of boiling water for 20-30 minutes. Tip half a pint (well, it always seemed like half a pint) of the 'boiling' oil into your ear and bung the end of your ear up with half a pound of cotton wool.

Did it work? Did it f**k. Just felt like someone had filled your ears up with a pint of water, and you were deaf for two days.

When you pulled out the cotton wool after two days, all the oil just poured out and you could hear again normally. Amazing cure - not Exclamation

The fact that your ear infection had actually cured by itself within those two days never entered into the equation. We always thought it was the olive oil that fixed it Razz

Oh well, you've got to bless your parents, haven't you?

I remember having the olive oil treatment too, but it seems that having my ear bunged up with oil and cotton wool was even more traumatic than the original wax problem.
Also I can't even remember if it actually worked or not https://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/fragend/confused-smiley-013.gif

Wearing earplugs a lot will pull the wax out. Although why you'd sit there with plugs in I don't know. Laughing

All the ear candles do is put VERY gentle suction into the ear.

Fuck that, either get the missus to suck on your ear, or use your bike key to scrape all the wax out.

My Kawasaki key is almost perfect! Wink

ear candles don't work.

olive oil is still the recommended solutionm to soften the wax, then make an appointment at your GP to get the nurse to "sryinge" them.. they don[t use a sryinge however... more of a tiny, warm water pressure washer to flush them out.

went thru all this and had it done just before Xmas

try bicarbonate of soda ear drops ( available from all good pharmacies ) you will be amazed, if not disgusted, at what comes out. And the odd clicking and crunching noises inside your ear as the stuff starts moving about. Sick

read the post Rolling Eyes Wink .. its not a "sryinge" the actual sryinge has been banned.. it's now an ultrasonic, warmed waterjet that washes it out.

srynging is just thw term used for the process.

Cheers for the replies. Might try those bicarb of soda ear drops, sounds interesting. I think 15 years of sticking cotton buds in my ears has probably done me no good at all Confused

Greatmoored - Do you have to purchase these with a prescription? Or just buy them off the shelf. When you take the ear drops do you have to wait a few minutes and then wash your ear out or something to get the wax build up out?

Feef - How did you go about getting this treatment done? I mean do you need to see a doctor first to give the go ahead or can you go to your local NHS and basically say I want my ears cleaning/"syringing"? Is there any side effects for this sort of stuff, and how's your hearing now you've had it done.. is it a noticeable difference?

just get them off the shelf. You might want to get some cotton wool while youre there too. Its just sort of runs out Sick
As for syringing, ring your doctor and ask to see the nurse, it only takes 5 minutes.

Do you have to lay down whilst someone puts the drops in for the stuff to 'run out', and can't it run the opposite direction so it goes further into your ear canal?

The ear canal is self-cleaning. Do not insert any implements such as cotton buds into the ear. They will damage the delicate skin lining the ear and increase the chance of you developing an ear infection, itchy ears or a problem with wax.

To dry / clean the outside of the ear use a dry tissue or alcohol free baby wipes around and behind the ear after showering or bathing.

If you suffer from excessive wax; insertion of 1 to 2 drops of olive oil on a regular basis may help the ear clean itself.

If the entrance to the ear canal is dry and/ or itchy, you may find it of benefit to insert one drop of olive oil into the ear canal as instructed by your nurse. Keep the ears dry from any entry of water, as it may be shampoos and soaps irritating the skin.

If you have experienced an external ear infection keep the ears dry from any entry of water.

To keep the ears dry from water entry use cotton wool coated in petroleum jelly or ear plugs placed at the entrance to both ear canals.

If the symptoms with your ear do not improve make an appointment with your nurse or doctor.

you can substitute olive oil for almond oil
(but not if you are allergic to nuts d'oh)

Where'd you get the idea that they're Chinese?

It says on the blurb pages that they are from Hopi Indians.

The only mention of Chinese is the Yin and Yang THEORY of getting the aromatherapy stuff into them.

PLUS it says they are NOT for removing wax, but that the softening of wax for easier removal is a side-effect (?benefit). They are for balancing inner ear disorders (physical and spiritual, no doubt).

Personally, the whole idea has had me pissing myself with laughter from start to finish of this thread, and whilst reading the actual link to the ear candle saga, cos I originally had imagined somebody sitting there with a candle stuck in each ear.

I'll stick to using cotton buds and shouting "What?" at people a lot more as I get older, thanks.

Can the ear candles be used on children?
BioSun ear candles can be used even on small children. Ear candles can be used on children who are old enough to clearly communicate what they are feeling, usually from 2.5 to 3 years. Also the child should not be frightened or need to be held down. Shocked

this was the first-time I'd had it done.. I made an appt with the GP who check it WAS wax buildup that was affecting my hearing and nothing else.. she then told me to use warmed olive oil, a couple of drops, 3 times a day which would soften the wax and make the flushing easier and more comfortable. I had an appt with the nurse 2 weeks later.

The nurse used the widget to whoosh out the gunk from my ears and when she was done, I felt like superman with "super-hearing" on the drive home, even the noise of the seatbelt on my jacket, and the creak of leather was defening so close to my ear Very Happy, mainly down to my ears having overcompensated for the deafness for so long Very Happy

hearing is fine now, no complaints whatsoever.

my mum has been getting hers done a couple of times a year for ages, and she's suffered no longterm effects.
