Had a new 2nd hand motherboard turn up, Giga-byte GA-7nnxp and I now need a case that can hold 14 drives. Any suggestions?

What size drives are they? 3.5" or 5.25"?

I suspect your going to be needing to look at a server type case for that number of drives.

3.5 exposed 3-4

5.25 exposed 3-5

3.5 covered 8

So I need a little flexability as well.

Mine is 18" tall with 4 drives, can't imagine what 14 would be like.

Shocked

says only 10 drives possible @ https://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-167-1.htm ?

i have an antec sx1030b which is quite old now but has room for 4 fitted 3.5" drives in its removeable carries and 2 in the floppy bays (who needs floppy drives anyways) then you can stick 4 in the 5.25" bays with 5.25" - 3.5" converters.

otherwise just get an external drive case.

It's wrong.

4 ide channels = 8 drives

2 Sata drives = 2 drives

1 Floppy channel = 2 drives

I also run a 3.5' smart card reader and a 3.5' USB 2.0 hub.

I use floppies. Your case is to small.

Which would ruin the point of getting a good powerful motherboard and what I was getting away from.

Surely you can stick the drives in an external case, but wire them directly up to your mobo with long cables?

I'm a fan of old unix hardware - You should be able to get some kind of old array off eBay cheap to stick the drives in.

There are back plates to run the Sata's but I would just prefer to have everything internal so I don't spill tea or fag ash over them.

Well in that case, why don't you get a large old array, then hack up the insides so you can fit your mobo in there along with anything else you need. You could even cut the back off the disc array, take the backpannel off a pc case, then weld it on so you can have all your connectors neat.

Though doing that might make you more of a geek than you would like Laughing

Starting to look like I might have to do something like what you suggest Nath.

It's gonna be a while before I need to fill all the slots but I will get there. I've got a old Compaq array that I might just have to chop up or the alternative is to make a nice solid wood case with internals removed from a normal case.

We will see and thanks for the ideas Nath.

Yeah the DPS doesn't seem to work on this one, won't even POST when it's fitted but if you remove it everythings fine!

The LED's all light up so just got to find another DPS to test it against. Could even be my power supply not up to providing enough power.

i wouldn't think so mate. the job of the dps is the regulate the power that goes to the board. keep it steady source going to it.

How about something like this?

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DELL-POWEREDGE-4200-SERVER-PII-300-34-4-GB-NR9_W0QQitemZ5869844495QQcategoryZ1484QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

You could probably hack it about a bit to get it all to fit.

I've already got a dual Xeon 4300 and 2 Blade 350's sitting in a rack and none are suitable. \Biggest problem is it needs to stay a desk top or I'd just rack mount a couple of standard boxs.

I think I just might have to custom make something.

just cos the board supports that much storage do you realy WANT that much storage.
youll be hard pressed to find a case with 14 bays. the CM stacker wich is a full tower and has the entire front all 5 3/4" bays only has 12 (i think) and anyway thats like £110 just for the case.

i vote you go homebrew way and MAKE a case, you can make them out or mechano, lego (technic), Knex ect...or wood, ive seen one made of string off coat hangers. or you could make a drawer in your desk, that would be fear Very Happy

just be careful if your having two cases as if you make the ATA cabels too long you start to loose data. im not sure what the max length is but if your going that way id check upon it.

It's not just disc bays that are the problem but remember I've already filled 6 of those. Theres also lack of header points on the back of the case.

As I normally run an AGP card, a Digital TV card, game port header, firewire header, spdif header thats 5 of the 8 headers points used already and I still have 4 PCI slots available which will be filled at some point.

well i assume your useing the headers that wont be used by PCI cards...if you know what i mean...i cant think of any way to add more slots in the back...unless you make holes for the individual connectors.
do you seriousley use all the features of that board, ive NEVER know anyone need to use all the headers, inlcluding Com ports, Midi ports, Fire wire....who uses those! you dont need amny USB, as you just get a USBhub...

The com ports are about all I don't use.

I've just upgraded from a GA-7kvmp where everything was full except the com ports.

The reason for getting the new board was that most things are on it, saves messing around.
