Hi,

I am basically looking for some advice.

About a week ago a house mate of mine accidentally shot the screen of my Fujitsu laptop (Amilo V7010)with a BB gun ( don't ask! I'm too annoyed to explain!). A picture of the damage is below. Anyway because the fault has occurred due to me using the machine 'incorrectly', it is obviously not covered under warranty, as confirmed by the call centre.
So i rang up the repair centre and they said it will be nearly £600 in total to repair (new screen)! Now i clearly can't afford this and even if i could it is probably more than the laptop is worth anyway.

So does anyone have any idea whether there is anything i can do, other than get a new screen, to even improve the damage?
Or is the only choice to get it looking any better atall to get a new screen?

Cheers

Steve

Does it have a VGA output? You could attach it to a normal monitor. It'd be naff all use as a laptop but at least you wouldn't lose the use of a PC.

Keep an eye out on eBay, people often sell knackered laptops or just the screens, and they go for very little, relatively. In the meantime, see if it has that VGA port and attach a monitor, or live with it! It isn't totally unusable at least.

the manufacture will charge you an absolute fortune for a replacement screen, check around some places on ebay people will have spare parts for laptops

https://www.techno-mart.co.uk/

these guy sell spare parts for fujistu.

just thinking, were i work sell fujitsu stuff, surefly the v7010 isn't over a year old just yet. See if you can get covered under accidental damage.

that or apply for extra warranty, which covers for accidental damage and theft.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Not sure about the VGA output as to tbh im not sure what to look for! I am at Uni though so i don't have a spare monitor anyway. Sad

@ Skunkcap Freddie - Thanks for that info, i'm going to ring that Techno Mart in a mo to see what they say. Not sure exactly how old my model is but strangely it isn't listed on a lot of sites, including that Techno Mart one?!
Guess i could look at extra insurance then claim a month or so after purchase.... Confused

Will update you soon

Cheers

Just spoke to Techno Mart, they said they can do the screen for £269 + VAT, and they fit it for free. So thats not too bad i guess, better than £600 like Fujitsu quoted anyway!

So thanks Freddie for the info! Thumbs Up

I'm just going to have to see if i can afford it now, tbh its not desperate though as i can still use the laptop but it would be nice to get sorted.

Cheers

check how much the extra warranty cover is.

actually check how old your laptop is. Then see if you can get the extra cover i don't think it's as dear as what that company have quoted you for the replacement screen

I bought the laptop about 4 months ago as an ex-demo from a shop in Manchester, which to be fair didn't seem particularly well ran or completely trust worthy but it was a good deal. They told me i had 6 months warranty with them, then 6 months after that with Fujitsu. But Fujitsu have said that the shop would just send it to the Fuji repair centre anyway so i might aswell deal directly with them.

So my machine in particular in definately in warranty but it doesn't cover what has been done to it. The model design itself was released in 2004 afaik.

Would the extended warranty (acc. damage + theft) prices be on the main Fujitsu website (if they are i cant't find them), or are you talking about taking it out with a seperate company that specialise in it?

Cheers again

no, directly with fujistu. the shop you bought it from have to cover you for 12months, have a read through the trading standards website.

i'll have a look on fujistus website and if i can't find anything , i'll speak to my mate who buys the stuff in for the company and i'll let u know

https://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/support/insurance.html

was looking through the warrantys they are very vague on what they cover. have a check on that site mate.

Also the extended warrantys can only be bought up to 90days after purchase. so you screwed there.

if you werent at uni you could do what imgoingto dowith this laptop once any integrated component fails, modify the cooling, (get a new laptop), then sit this in the corner and use it as a Fileserver and web server on my network using VNC to control it from any PC in the world.
a few USB harddrives and its sorted for storage Razz.

but its my basic belief that once the screen goes better off just getting a new laptop, tho i suppose your screen was kind of encouraged on its way so its not exactley defying natural progression.
who seriousley thaught a BB gun WOULDNTown the screen..."ooo i wander if thats one of those hard screens [pop - crack] guess not"

I used to work for these https://www.laptopsolutions.net/ and these https://www.laptops.tv/

Give them a ring. I don't know what they charge now for screens, but mention the quote you have already got - treat it like insurance - as you can haggle with both places.

Thanks for that Fuzz, much appreciated i will give them a ring.

The lads were actually tryin to shoot me and when i moved out the way the BBs hit my laptop, one of them has offered to pay towards it but i'm not really the kind of person to make a mate pay it all, it's just one of those things that happens. Tis' a bitch though!

Thanks for all the replies fellas, tis' much appreciated!

Came across this the other day:

https://www.mobilityguru.com/2006/02/24/how_to_replace_a_broken_laptop_or_notebook_display/

If you can manage to source a replacement screen yourself, then the DIY route may be an option if you want to keep costs down.

Here is a guide that they link to detailing LCD removal and replacement:
https://www.screentekinc.com/lcd-removal-instructions.shtml

Hope that helps,
Chris

Thats great, thanks so much Chris!

Think thats swayed me to having a go myself now as it doesn't look to hard to do. Just need to find the cheapest place for screens; that Screentek looked quite promising actually Thinking

Cheers Thumbs Up

I'm sure if he's a mate he wouldnt mind coughing up a bit towards it - even if it was 50 quid - you don't lose a mate and you don't have to fork out quite so much Confused Question

Yeh hes said he will pay towards it but not sure how much, guess i'll find out when the time comes.

I've found this on egay which i think will fit my latop as mines an Amilo V7010. What do you lot think? The seller says they bought it but it didn't fit their model, but wouldn't they have checked first? Don't know whether to be suspicious or not. Confused

That screen looks like it's off a D series to me. Acer use the same reference design aswell. I don't think it will fit the V series.
