Used to do taekwondo too, untill i realised what a waste of time it was. Great for fitness and body conditioning, useless for self defence.

ive done judo, karate and now im doing aikido. id recomend karate for everybody to do, as it gives you a good base for other martial arts, as well as providing you with self defence knowledge.

and although tae kwon do is shit for practical fighting, so are most japanese martial arts. the only "REAL" practical martial art would be Mixed Martial Arts, MMA, or some brazilian jujutsu.

but yea, tkd sucks ass lol Laughing

If you have the ability, why not?

A lot of people (myself included) are put off martial arts because of all the semi-mystical bullshit that comes with it, and the general 'feel' that one gets from talking to martial artists.

I'm interested in doing one of these self defence courses that are drawn from various disciplines. I'm not interested in getting belts or ranks, just improving my hand-to-hand skills. Can't seem to find anything around here that fits the bill, so I might just spar with a few of the instructors at work instead, and pick up a few more moves.
One of the benefits of work is that we get paid to learn the Home Office techniques, and the personal defence section is always evolving - this year it's much more aggressive, pre-emptive punches rather than throws and grabs. Very Happy

I can reccomend Thai Boxing (Muay Thai). It is very tiring!

They teach you grappling techniques, elbowing, kneeing, boxing, kicking. It is also a lot of fun.

True, though moving up the belt colours is just the ability to follow a set routine for 20 mins. I hate the belt system too. At my ex-classes there were some black belts who could deliver the goods when it came to the patterns, 1/3 step sparring ect but when it came to free sparring they would regularly get knocked to their ass by much lower graders.

There used to be a time limit when i did it of 6 months per grading, yes its piss to learn the patterns but the gradings at 6 months meant that you became a lot more experienced otherwise you will just get black belts that can do the patterns but will get fucked over when it comes to sparing.

Used to see it quite a bit with the girls at sparing competitions, even though its non contact they would get knocked around, although this years army martial arts championship was won by a girl, she was probably 6,2 black tag and fuck me was she something. Shocked

I study Wing Chun Kung Fu (Lee Shing lineage) and my instructor doesn't believe in gradings or anything like that. We just learn what we can, and use what we've learned.

We do sparring and Chi Sau (which is 'sticky hands' but its basically a very light form of sparring.) and I thorougly enjoy it.

It doesn't have any kicks above the belt and no flowery movements. It is basically designed to be direct and to the point, practical for self defence and easy to learn wether you are old or young, strong or weak.

I thorougly reccomend it! Smile

Thats the one i did, i think. The instructor [Kenny Walton] was supposed to be one of the top guys in the sport. Nice guy but a bit too soft on the class. If somone got a bloody nose or something he made a big fuss over of it and the whole class would be stopped for 5 mins.

I've been training in Jujitsu for a few years now. Great fun, very stress relieving, keeps you fit and an excellent defence system too Thumbs Up

You forgot the headbutts Wink

Something thats not encouraged obviously, but you would be surprized how quick someone lets you out of a grab when you butt them Twisted Evil

I haven't trained for about 5 years now, but used to love sparring with blokes that used to come to us from a different art and thought they had taken a hit before Laughing

I once got asked to leave a kickboxing class cos me and my sparring buddy were 'too physical' Thumbs Down Rolling Eyes Very Happy

Looks like a few people seem to agree with me to an extent.

I'm not interested in climbing a ranking system or learning things by rote. I like to think that I have nothing to prove, as I put what modest skills I have to use on at least a weekly basis, for real. I'd like to do something that doesn't take a huge commitment of time and effort, but builds on the skills and techniques I've already learnt.

I personally think that the over-stylisation of most martial arts can render them useless in real world situations. Unless you are prepared to devote huge amounts of time to them, it makes more sense to learn the basic principles of throws/punches/kicks/locks, and then practise applying them in a variety of circumstances.
