Advice on buying first bike

Hi i am looking at buying my first bike after passing my test could anyone please give me any sound advice on whats best to get, ive been and looked at some like all the 600's gsxr, cbr the cbr is the cheapest to insure but dont know if it is suitable with being a novice, i quite like the sv 650 but want a sports bike so dont know whether to jump straight on one or get something like the sv HELP!!! Confused

Straight from test id look to get a 400, SV650's would be ok aswell as they are pretty similar power and speeds to the 400's in previous expereinces!

if your jumping straight on to a 600 then be careful, 600's wise R6's and Gixxers are defo not forgiving at times!

but if you trust your riding and self control theres no reason why you shouldnt get one its just for people like me who have no respect and jump on them and whack the throttle back, but then again i went through all my bikes, 50,125,400 and now 600!

im in the situation now where im in the market for a new bike. Im looking for a commuter at the min

My current considerations are gs500 or cb500 since they are cheap (easily pick up a minter for less than £1500) and an ideal stepping stone in my eyes. Although If I saw a pristine vfr400 or cbr400 at the right price I would maybe think twice.......

The sv650 I didnt like till I looked around at the fairing kits available. Thing is its a little out of my price range Sad

I've been thinking about the same thing a lot recently and have changed my mind many times. I've gone from a SV to a Thundercat, to a commuter like the Er-5 to a VFR400. I think I'm settled on a ZXR400 now though, found one I like and it's nearby Laughing

which makes a change.

Won't be able to ride it for a few months, but it's supposedly better to buy earlier in the year (winter) as less people sell/sell for higher prices in the summer.

I guess it depends on the style of bike you like, 400 sports are apparently the most common for a 17 year old, but finding one in good condition is a pain for that same reason.

You can ask as many questions you like, to as many people. You can read encyclopedias of reviews on different bikes, but at the end of the day it really comes down to what you like most and what you think will best suit you.

Also, the insurance on a SV650 is pretty damn cheap over at Bennetts, whereas most sports sixxers are quite a bit more. Same applies to the 400's.

Don't buy the first one you see, take your time and look at different bikes, sit on them to see if they're comfortable etc. and maybe give them a little test ride (if you're buying after you've passed of course Wink

)
