rusted pads and discs

've got solid discs and EBC HH pads.

I hadn't used the bike for a few days and when I went to use it this morning the pads had rusted solid onto the discs. Normally I just stick the bike into first and let the clutch out gently and that does the trick. I tried that this morning and the back end span up and the front stayed in place

I kicked the discs (I'm dead technical) to try and loosen them but that didn't do it.

So, without wanting to cover the pads and discs in WD40, how do I free them? Is it a case of getting a metal wallpaper stripper and a hammer and just chiselling the pads off the discs?

I wouldn't recommend attacking anything near the discs with a hammer. The only suggestion I have is to drain the brake fluid completely, and then separate the pads by riding gently forward (clutch and back brake.) Without the fluid there might be less resistance to the pistons and they may break free. I wouldn't risk damaging the discs TBH.

I wouldn't fanny about draining the fluid, just pry the pads back gently. A decorator's scraper (without the hammer Wink

) sounds ideal - nice and thin.

I went for a very fine long knife and tapped it under the outer pads on each disc

If I die tomorrw I know it went wrong Smile

try just rocking the bike back and forth....might free them up... Confused

A wooden or plastic wedge would be better next time. Laughing

If your not going to use the bike for a few days it might be worth slipping some thin plastic between the pads and disc.

Have you got sintered pads in. They are a definite NNOOOO in winter. The high metal content of sintered pads reacts with the salt from the crap they put on our roads and bimetallic corrosion races away and your discs get a nasty case of the rust worm.
Best to get yourself a set of standard pads for the winter.

Don't mess around just hit the caliper with a rubber mallet a couple of times.

It may ease the problem if you dont use the front brake when parking up, that way the pads will be a little further from the disc.
