Question about modified exhausts

Here goes. I've got a CBR400NC23 that I bought recently. The owner before me has fitted a viper can on it. But its a lot smaller than any exhausts ive seen before. Now when I got my local mechanic to look at it he immediately pointed out that the exhaust fitted on it had been cut down deliberately as some kind of DIY job to make it look 'cool.' He also said that when the can is shortened as mine is I'd be losing some torque from the bike. Can anyone confirm this? Would I be losing any kind of power from having this shorter exhaust can on my bike?

A cut down exhaust can affect the midrange, your best bet is to get it on a dyno to check it out.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

im sure it started with stunt riders doing it, so they can tip the bike virticaly an not scrape the exhaust.. on the ground
