Hi dudes,

I have come across a couple of my old games that will not run under XP SP2. I really want to play them.

I was reading that SP2 was designed as a way of adding security features to XP before releasing Longhorn (Vista).

I don't really need these features, the firewall doesn't stop the things that I want it to stop, and I have a hardware firewall anyway.

My question is, are there any other downsides to removing SP2 that I might need to know?

Thanks for your help! Smile

Can't see any reason why SP2 would affect game play Confused

Just go into add/remove programs and remove it.

I wouldn't have thought so either.

Are you sure they will run under XP at all? For example my copy of Roque Spear won't run under XP. They did release an XP compatible version but didn't bother making a patch for previous releases Rolling Eyes

Just right click on the game icon, then properties, then change the compatibility to a different version of windows.

There is a list released my microsoft saying that MotoRacer 3 (among others) WILL NOT WORK with SP2.

I have changed the compatibility mode to 95, and 98/me to see if that would help. It doesn't.

I just want to know if SP2 is only the firewall/virus thing or if I will lose any other functionality (such as future security updates).

https://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/08/16/news_6104980.html

I have disabled the windows firewall, but it still doesn't work. I know for a fact that this game used to work under XP, because I have had XP for a long while now. Longer than I have had the game!

The Microsoft webshite tells you how to open ports for certain games, but MotoRacer 3 isn't in there Sad

I want to know if it is worth removing SP2 ( I have a hardware firewall) for the sake of a game?

I think sickpup is about right on this one. I've not got SP2 installed at home for one reason or another. If you aren't using this machine for business/business critical and have a decent firewall then I wouldn't worry about not using SP2 really.

ID keep SP2 if i were you...unless its an offline machene next to your main one, SP2 give ALOT more security to windows, which says alot for how bad it was to start with!
