If I save a file, either from the internet or from a program, it takes ages to save on my laptop. It will stop responding briefly, on that screen, and then maybe a minute later it completes the save and all is well.

Is there any reason why this is? It's worth mentioning, about 55GB of a 60GB HDD is being used. Could this be the problem?

Thanks'en. Thumbs Up

Defrag Thumbs Up

Also remember that your pagefile takes up a fair amount of hard disk space, and some processes need a certain amount of free space to run, so you can never fill a single hard drive system with 1 partition to capacity.

I reckon you should remove some non essential items, temp files etc and then run defrag.

As a quick note, Windows defrag needs 15% free space to run, which means you'd need about 9Gb free on your drive.

Sickpup, what's the issue with AMD chips and this sort of thing?

Do you have any mapped drives that arent connected? as this will cause your machine to stop responding until it works out that it cant connect to it.

It's the AMD power management system on laptops.

When doing a file save/transfer the chip may decide nothings happening so go into a power save type slow mode.

The work around used to be to run WMP in the background.

This problem was particularly noticable when transferring files from a USB drive.

Forgot all about this post! Laughing

It's an AMD Turion sickpup, but it's nearly always plugged into the mains, so I have it on the highest performance setting. Don't know if that would make a difference. Plus I very nearly always have either iTunes or Media Player running a video or some music, so this would stop the power management system kicking in, wouldn't it?

I think what I'll do first off is buy some decent DVDs (see other Geek Zone thread Rolling Eyes ) to burn all my films and Tv programmes and stuff onto, and then give it a defrag and see how it goes.

Thumbs Up
