Sounds like you need to establish port forwarding on your router, and to make life easier set up a DDNS redirector to point to your webservers IP address.

Have a look through your routers configuration page to see if you can forward port 80 towards your webserver's IP address, then get your friends to try it out.

If you need any extra help don't hesitate to PM me.

The way I usually test external connection is to try and find an open proxy server, do a search on google for one.

What IP address are you giving them, the one on the machine (web server) or the one on the router?

Are you on BT Broadband because sometimes what is my ip will come back with one of the bt proxy servers, but if you are using the ip that your web hosting software says it is it should be ok.
