www.raf.mod.uk
There is a link on there to the careers website.
Pilot is VERY hard to get, but you can easily get a job elsewhere in the RAF. ____________________ When You're Starting To Choke, Take Some Pills With Your Coke, Its Hyserical |

I went through the RAF Pilot selection process.....and failed.
It's very very very very hard and then only the best of the group will be chosen.
Questions you need to ask yourself:
Are you a good leader/can you give clear and effective instructions under pressure?
Are considerably above average intelligence?
Can you do mental arithmetic while trying to remember a random code and responding to colour stimuli?
Are you willing to sign a service contract of 16 years? Bearing in mind you may not be selected for as a fast jet pilot.
Can you handle a military lifestyle?
Are you in perfect health?
Are you willing to bomb a target knowing there will probably be civilian casualties? |

As a side to just been a pilot there are LOTS of other paths inside the RAF.
It is the best out of the services, when I say best I mean easiest, but please don't think that its a walk in the park.
Also dont forget the army and navy also have pilots. ____________________ The BCF's very own Party boy! Though he's getting old and feeling it!

Good luck to you then mate.
Start reading up as much as you can about RAF deployments around the world and their significance.
In general read the broad sheets to help you understand world politics etc... |

I just mean its fucking hard to become a pilot, sure there are minimum requirements but so many people are trying to join they are able to be very picky.
I thought you had to be a uk resident for a while before hand, didn't realise that wouldn't be a problem.
Good luck though anyway, maybe give the selection guy a few special favours to secure your place. |

I was fortunate to spend nearly 10 years in the RAF. It is a great life for a single bloke, as long as you aren't afraid of working hard and doing what you are told without questioning it.
However, as has already been said, you have to be really bloody good to become a pilot (or very lucky).
As for what else there is, I was a Telecoms Engineer (good for when I left), there are also things like Weapons Techs, Aircraft Techs, Comms Operators, General Admin Staff, Catering Staff.
Remember though, don't mention that you would settle for anything other than pilot to anyone in the recruitment phase. They want people that are totally committed to being a pilot, if you suggest you would do something else they will question your commitment and offer you a ground job.
Like Danny said, make sure you are well up to date on current affairs and current military mobilizations - they will ask questions and expect you to be able to give clear and concise answers without waffling. Also a good knowledge of current and proposed RAF aircraft is a good thing.
Good luck with it - it's bloody hard to get in, but it'll be worth every minute of it if you succeed ____________________ I spend all my money on bikes and beer, the rest I simply waste! |
