Hey all, I've got a bit of a problem with a Uni assignment I've been given.

Its a design engineering subject and is basically a calculation of acting forces etc...

This is not my strong point at all.

If anybody is good at this stuff and is willing to help (i'll paypal you a fiver Smile )

Then please let me know and i'll can in the document.

cheers

Just taken a second year uni exam in Mechanics for an engineering course.

Stick it in this thread and I'm sure lots of people will help!

The first question is shit. There's a turning moment acting about point c on the mast, which is transferred down BD. Provided BD remains rigid, There than becomes a turning moment about point D. The latter turning moment can't be calculated as the distance from D to the location of force application isn't known.

As for the rest, i'm stumped if i know how to calculate a bending moment!

Part A
a) do a free body diagram of ODC and one of BD with all forces acting to maintain equilibrium, use trig to get resultant forces where necessary

b) work out forces acting on AF and draw a free body diagram so you can then calculate bending moments. do bending moments diagram (I forget the proper name for this) and then find where the maximum bending moment is on the diagram

c) you need a cross section which is just strong enough to stand this bending moment. In realy life you would include a safety factor but they havnt mentioned this. So calculate the dimensions of a cross section which will just stand this bending moment. You should be given the modulus of steel or aluminium or have it in a look up table.

d) calculate section size when you know deflection and the bending moment acting on the mast

I cant actually remember the forumlae you use but i think its the one with E,I,M,d (or maybe y) and 2 others expressed as 3 quotients which are equal to each other. You rearrange to get what you want to work out.

part B
one improvement could be to have the mast held upright by the tension in a string or rope attached between O and F. It would need to be attached to the mast lower than D though so that the sail could be moved around the mast to get the right angle to the wind. A string rope or line would be lighter than strut BD.

The back wheel could be moved nearer to E where the weight of the driver acts. This would reduce the bending moment in AF so you could use a smaller section saving weight.

Also bumps in the ground will stress AF so maybe there should be a safety factor brought into calculations and maybe some form of suspension should be used to reduce the stress on AF.

DISCLAIMER
I think this is first year stuff so its about 12 years since I did this and I havnt used it since. Anyone off your course will give you better advice than me but thanks for giving me the opportunity to try to remember it Smile

If you dont already have a mechanics of solids textbook, get one. You need to be on top of this stuff asap because leaving it and trying to catch up in a few months is a bad plan. If your trig is a bit ropey revise is.

Bending moments are easy to do, but I would need a free body diagram in 2d format to be bothered to do it, clearly detailing the constraints and forces acting on which points and in which directions.

Ooooh, don't say that - you'll upset all the engineers that do all the work while you lot (bloody salesmen!!) get all the money! Wink

Seriously - I would help but my degree was as long ago as Colin's and was in electronics/electrical engineering so can't be any more help than they have been.

Have to say though that Colin has at the very least given you some good hints, surely you can use what he has suggested to get some ideas from text books??

Doh!! Most useless post ever!!!!
