Have just done it with Fedora rather than ubuntu, but I figure the principle's the same.
What I did was..... In Windows, I used Partition Magic to create an area on the disk to be unpartitioned, unformatted, free space.
Booted from the Fedora DVD, and installed it to the bit marked Free Space. When it asks where you want the boot sector, don't choose the MBR. Note the number assigned to the Linux partition (Type 83), this will be useful later.
The rest I got from this link. When it's installed, it boots Windows again, and you need to change the boot.ini to have a linux option.
This link is also useful.
and this one.....
There may well be a better way to do this, but this worked very well for me. Now I've mastered the install, I just need to learn more than just 'grep'.
