lower fairing Very Happy
I wanted lower fairing like Harley FLHTCUI.
https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b295/kawashima_/FLHTCUI.jpg
So I searched for leg shields option of other bikes but couldn't find nice one. Yesterday I found These dustbin lids in DIY shop. They were only 5pounds so I bought lids with plastic tie-up.
Today I removed knobs, cut some part, drilled, tied up to engine guards.
I test rode with normal clothe. Knees are higher than upper of them, but legs are not cold. They were effective.
I started this as joke of course but ended nice.

After test ride.

Wrote a nice long post and lost it. Rolling Eyes

In summary it was watch to make sure they dont block too much air passing over the engine to keep it cool.

Wouldnt it make the bike overheat more easily? I take it is air cooled and you blocking most of the air going to the bottom part?

Maybe adding one or two air ducts will be a safe idea.

Cool, but you are going to want a hole/gap in them to let air over the engine. I have had a fully faired, air-cooled bike before which used to overheat like a bastard despite there being a hole there.

I would chop out some of the bit in the middle so they cover the space made by the crash bars but do not obstruct the passage of air over the engine in the centre.

Thanks for helpful advises. I wanted to know if this experiment is bad for air cooled engine and your advises have answered to my
questions. I'll modify fairings (and touch engine and compare how hot engine becomes). If they seem to damage engine, cut tie-ups and stock them until next winter. I'll be careful not to damage engine with this experiment.

Looking at the pictures some more and I noticed how close the header pipes are to the bin lids (sorry, panels). If you go for a long ride you may find the plastic starting to either melt, or at the very least deform.
If it starts to soften with the heat the wind pressure may push the plastic onto the pipes.

Hahaha, great stuff Thumbs Up

Do they work?

The deformation will depend on the type of plastic really, namely how its formed, thermoseting plastic will have to get pretty warm before it changes shape, other forms will not take much before they turn into a puddle!

Appart formt he colour they look pretty smart in an odd sorta way Laughing (might want a better mounting than cableties though Wink )

If you have a tempreture guage then just keep an eye on it, you might find you have no problem appart from the really hot days (and it does get filipin warm there Shocked )

Put it this way... if they help but you dont want them all the time, you can allways fit them before a long trip Thumbs Up

They were sold as option for dustbin and I could buy them without dustbin Laughing (DIY shop girl looked comfused).
Zimbo wrote:

I must remove them once before I go to one day trip with shop members this weekend(I can't trouble them with possible overheat on mine). I could run at 60-70 so aerodynamics seems ok for short run, but I need some modification after trip(I'm thinking of drilling many holes at center sides. This plastic is hard type and seems difficult to cut at center of lids)

They looked expensive so I search for cheep one for this experiment.

If you could get a tempreture "probe" for food (checking meat is cooked e.t.c.) that might give you a good indication of the tempreture? use wire to tie the probe somewhere like the top of the pistons/rockerbox covers? (just not on the exhausts) might work Confused

There are compnys that sell replacements for oil filler caps that have guages on them, but they are quite pricey..

keep at it Thumbs Up

I bought "RR Oil Temperature Gauge"
https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b295/kawashima_/RR-3.jpg
Normal temp is 80-100 degrees(day).

So I tested dustbin lids at cold night, it was 80 degrees after I run at 80miles/h for 20mins.(photo is 70 : 10 downed)
https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b295/kawashima_/RIMG0002.jpghttps://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b295/kawashima_/RIMG0007.jpg

And top speed was 113miles/h.
BUT! these lids generates very uncomfortable turbulance.
I removed them.
https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b295/kawashima_/RIMG0009.jpg

I wanted to finish cutting tonight but I got tired! I giveup.

Completion report.
I cut center part off, and fixed them again.
https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b295/kawashima_/fairing1.jpghttps://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b295/kawashima_/fairing2.jpg

Impression
Before I cut center part off, I felt strong and uncomfortable swirl around my legs, but this time wind stream from outside and inside the fairings seem to be equalized and the swirl disappeared. I tried various speed from 100-160km/h, there was no problem. Oil temp. was below 90 even after 160km/h ride. So I could check overheat tolerance, don't have to remove them lots of times.
https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b295/kawashima_/finaltemp.jpg
After I got off the motorway, I felt a little bit warmed wind flow at my legs. This warmth and wind flow balance equally and I don't feel hot or cold. This enables me to ride for a long time without a rest.
Not stylish at all but I'm pleased with this custom. Joke custom became beneficial one for me Shocked .
Sorry for crap custom post but I thank for your posts cause I wouldn't have kept on this crazy custom if I didn't get ideas from your posts.
