Some of my records. Recently hooked the Hi Fi up to the computer so I can transfer the records to MP3 and play them through the computer. Doesn't compare to playing the real thing though.

Two of those records were pressed later than 1970. Which?

Led Zeppelin IV must be the other then. Early '70s?

I'm not sure what I'm meant to do with the ground cable on my record deck Embarassed I get a hiss through my speakers which is obviously related to it, which is a real pain on quiet songs (like Stairway to Heaven).

I'm slowly starting a collection of Split 7"s by underground metal bands. The last one I bought though, fell out the sleeve and onto the ground whilst I was walking home from the gig drunk. But the music on the record is so raw and brutal that you can't actually tell how scratched it is Laughing

Connect it to your amp or mixer to earth the record deck, that will solve the hiss.

Er, I am known as the 'Disco Don' with two radio shows, numerous gigs, and my own promotional night. blasting out 70's Disco music, exclusively on vinyl. Not bad for another 'old geezer'. I am sure most people's view of disco music is fairly limited to 'I Will Survive' and all things Bee Gees.....in fact modern house music (and lot of garage & R&B) takes their cues from music created in the 70's.

I love vinyl - it's very 'tactile' and if played on a good system sounds better than CD, which has IMHO a 'sterile' sound. So, Old Geeza (and you can't be that old if you are listening to 80's music) I'm with you on vinyl....

If you want to you can check out my personal website here

There should be an earth connector on your amp to connect it to, failing that, I would attach it to the metal frame (if it has one) which should be earthed.

Ideally you would have an analogue 'aux' input on your amp if there is no 'phono'. Some amps don't come with one these days, just digital. If so, try connecting it to the 'tuner' input which should also be analogue.

You running it with a pre-amp? If not, do you have to turn the volume up a lot when changing from CD to phono?

Mine hisssed like a bugger when I bi-wired them using cheap speaker cable. I also had a strange hissy distortion on high frequency guitar sounds which turned out to be due to a buggered stereo cartridge. (Top tip, go to DJ shops for these rather than a Hi-Fi shop, got a top quality stereo cartrige and stylus, fitted and set-up for £20).
