And?

Is it mint, or is it a ragged to death shitpile thats been run inbto the ground?

Most will tend to be veering toward the latter by that mileage.

Ah, another Kwak clitoris 400...

Mine is a J reg with 28,000 miles on it. Going to have a few hundred quid spent on it next month. Again. Shoud be sorted soon. It was a cheap bike because I was broke at the time. Prob would have spent fixing things what the bike cost in the first place.

I wouldn't worry about the age, just the condition.

11,000 miles. I'd have thought that was safe but you need to check it first. Valves, head gasket can be £££. Also Kwak cltuches rattle. A lot.

F*ckin' fun bikes though.

If you hear noises, they're meant to be on a kawasaki. My camchain is noisy despite having receipts saying that its valves were done and camchain tensioner replaced. Clutch pings when cold and rattles when decelerating.

Mine's a 250 but same thing would apply for the 400. Low milage for year may suggest it's been raced so double check for lockwiring, drilled sumps etc and tied wiring looms.

These bike's aren't meant to last and you'd expect your engine to say bye bye at about 40K miles.

How much is he asking?

Mine's on a J with 23K and is running better now than when I got it. Admittedly it's taken a bit of messing about, new head gasket and another set of carbs but that's only cost me about £90, but that was only because I was knocked off it. Hopefully when I get some money for my personal injury claim (if ever) I'll be spending some money on the old girl, get it looking how it should.

As others have said, Kwak's like to rattle, my clutch rattles like a bag of nails but that's pretty normal from what I hear. If you can get a test ride then do, and make sure you thrash the tits off it, if it jumps out of gear then I'd be very wary. All depends how much he's asking and what might need doing, if your prepared to wait you can get some cheap bits from eBay, and there's a couple of places I know that are pretty good at getting 2nd hand bits.

Thumbs Up

I've known bikes to need an engine transplant or reconditioning cos something goes wrong. Ric i think was telling me that his bike got a new engine or something like that.

My bike had a new engine quite some while ago - the chassis had done 19000 miles but it had a new engine 2000 miles before i bought it.

Just be sure to take any ZXR400 rider or anybody that knows their onions to give it a once over. I've seen good examples of ZXR's and many shagged examples, which is why i settled for the 250 instead of the 400.

I paid £1375 for mine with 16K on the clocks. It did have a new front tyre and a ZX-6R paintjob though, which I personally prefer to the standard colours.

When my gasket went and I had the head off, the pistons and barrels were in really good condition, and the rest of the engine looked sweet. It's like anything really, if it's thrashed it will deteriorate quicker, if it's looked after then I cant see it being a real problem. Thing is with ZXR's, the motor's in a fairly high state of tune as it is, and you need to thrash them to get the best out of them, but IMO it makes them more fun.

I religiously change the oil bang on 3000 miles, and make sure to keep up on my maintenance, and aside from having to replace the rectifier a little while ago my bikes been running perfectly. My only gripe with my bike is the cracked top fairing and scuffed fairing panels when I got knocked off, but if I get my money I'll get all that sorted and she'll be looking spot on again.

Thumbs Up

I know people have said there good for you're 1st bike but don't you think the maintenance side of it is a bit much for a learner to know.

Hey, the only problem with this bike is that in 4,000miles your going to have to replace the cam chain, not just the tensioners like most people do, which only holds the problem off for a few thousand miles. If you want I can walk you through replacing the cam chain yourself in the workshop section as the chains are only £20 but a garage would charge hundreds to fit, it takes me around an hour to do, from ride in ride out. As long as its all in good condition fully serviced and looked after £1300 is a very good price despite teh cam chain needing to be replaced shortly, Dan Thumbs Up

Nah, more incentive for a learner to learn! People who get lazy from the start end up paying a lot more money to mechanics over the years so start early Thumbs Up

oops, had 28k miles in my head for some reaseon.

At that mileage just make sure its had its oild changes and its not been slid down the road too many times, as they are a popular "my first big bike" machine.

ZXR400 will handle much better and be lighter.

Bandit 400 will be more comfy, pokier engine and much cheaper to maintain. Also the Bandit 1200 engine (and the earlier GSXR1100 engines) fits straight in Wink
