Hello again,
I'm having a bad month at the mo regarding bike maintainace...
After carrying out a mini service on my GPZ500s all was well..took her for a run last Saturday with no problems, she felt happy and responsive. Since that eventful day out I have carried out the following on the bike:

- Changed oil
- Re-placed old air filter with new one

The engine oil was topped up too high at first but i never took her for a run at this level, just let her tick over in garage and have since dropped the level to between the sight glass.

I also replaced the old air filter with the following:

Yesterday evening after work I was itching to get out and test her, she started fine and ran like normal when leaving my street, on the main road i started to notice problems, when trying to accelerate the bike would 'bog down' not respond, so i had to change gear. I ended up pulling into alley where she sat idleing in neutral quite happily. After letting her cool down for a bit i decided to try and get her home - same thing happened as expected, started off ok but soon lost power and didnt want to run. Eventually cut out and i was forced to push her home...

So now im back to square one with a massive itch to get back out on the road - im hoping i dont have a big problem as when she cool down she runs ok again...not sure if i should replace the old air filter and drop some more oil...?

Totally agree with you, refit the old filter and see if its better.
On some bikes when you overfill with oil it can push some excess out through the breather which feeds into the air filter box. If this has happened then it could of blocked up the new filter.
Its slightly possible that something might of got into the carb when you removed the old filter and its blocking one of the carbs.

Overheating is normally associated with either not enough fuel or too much air. Check the colour of the plug.

Did you have to take the tank off to change the filter?

Just inspected the new air filter...looks fine, no traces of oil.

Stupid question = Is the new filter supposed to be oiled first like my CG125 had to be... Embarassed

I hope to have the bike up and running nicely on weekend so i can use her for geeting back and for work...

Been reading up on problems assosiated with bikes bogging down, the problem feels similar to when I left my choke on my CG125??

Any help/abuse for stupidity welcome...just feeling a bit disheartend as it seems like one problem after another and all i want to do is ride...

Try the old air filter back in, if this cures the problem, you know what it was.

The filter should be lightly oiled but I would have expected over-oiling to cause the problem you describe rather than under oiling.

You said you let it cool down. Was it overheating? Did the fan come on? (The temperature guage on post '94 GPZ500s is a bit random and over-reads, the fan switch is accurate).

Your symptoms could be caused by a blocked tank breather which would cause an air-lock as the tank empties. Try running it with the fuel cap open and see if this sorts it.

I would like to apologise for maybe wasting ppls time but also thanks everyone for all the help I have received since i joined the forum....anyway hope u all enjoy this!!!!!

The tank didn’t have enough fuel, it wasn’t empty, I could see fuel in the tank, but not enough apparently for the tap.

My biker friend who has helped me with servicing the bike came over and helped point out this one minor flaw in my problem solving Embarassed .

Have just got back from riding along the A470 and everything seems fine...will be taken her on her maiden voyage to work 2mo. Again thankyou and trust me even though i must seem like a complete wanker I am learning, which is something I believe is important if you really want to appreciate these machines...

We have all done it Laughing . Glad it wasn't anything serious.

Now you just need to post about your bike not starting then find you have the kill switch set to 'stop'. Wink

Thumbs Up good of you to admit it. As Stinky says we all have mental blocks from time to time. Like my mate at work said...

"Have you pulled the fuse out?"

"Yes"

"Okay" bzzzzzz bang flash "Ouch, bastard"

"Oh, you mean that fuse"

Embarassed

I think the bigger problem on this forum is complete wankers giving answers to problems they know fuck all about so your little snafu is nothing to be worried about. Smile
Nothing like giving the correct answer to someones problem, only to have 6 idiots give the wrong advice & the bike owner goes with weight of numbers instead of the correct advice....
