40 oF (5 oC) or above .... SAE 20W40
60 oF (15oC) or above ... SAE 10W30

Which oil am I supposed to use???

I don't understand...which one I've to get and I need to do an oil change...

If it were me, I'd just use normal 10w-40, covers a bigger temperature range. You will probably struggle to find decent quality oils of the grades you describe. 10W-40 is pretty much standard for modern motorcycles and it covers the full viscosity range described in your post.

To me, they have got that backwards anyway. They are advocating putting thicker oil in for lower temperatures which is wrong on many levels.

You'll screw your clutch due to the friction modifiers.

Same old chestnut.

I have been using Castrol GTX in my GPZ500s for 50,000 miles and the clutch doesn't slip. I know it isn't exactly a v-max but I would have thought if it was going to cause that sort of problem, it would have done by now.

Avoid ones with specific anti-friction additives such as GTX "Magnatech".

Mates have used bog-standard petrol station forecourt oils (such as shell Helix) for years with no ill effects in bikes varying from an old Z650 to a brand new BMW R1100.

...The garage dudes I've spoken to before usually say ... almost any oil is better than none... doh! like really? Anyway I think I'll just buy some bog standard 10W40 as I think the jeep stuff is full of things to make it cost me more...basically Embarassed

PS Like those bike reviews on saddletramp... interesting... does a test drive cost anything? I've kindof promised myself a test drive of a Buell 12...

Don't know if it is still on, but Hein Gericke were doing an offer where you could buy a 5 litre drum of Motoul oil and get a free oil filter. Comes in at about £24.

Aye, pretty sure they will let you have a test ride if you seem sufficiently interested in buying one. Mole is pretty special when it comes to being persuasive though, and he knows quite a few people who work in the local bike shops which can only help. I have never seen anyone ride so consistantly fast on the road as Mole, he knows what he is talking about. Got rid of his R1 because it was "Too slow" . Rolling Eyes

But yamaha clutchs are very weak with some oiling problems on some models like the FZR/YZF range.

Do you know what the difference is between castrol GTX for cars and Gastrol GP for motorcycles?

£5 extra for a litre less. That's about the lot.

I've heard the same, but in practice have never had a problem with varying oils. I avoid fully synth, and that's about it

Used car oil in Yamaha engines loads of times with no nasty effects on the clutches.

All the best

Never had any problem with the type of oil on my thunderace just the piss poor clutch hub desgin the causes problems with oil getting to the back clutch plates causing them to chatter on fast starts and high revs which can lead to the hub and possably the basket breaking up. mines now been modified by a factory pro mod l found for the FZR/YZF bikes that has sorted the problem.

I just would,nt want to risk it with car oil on a bike that already has a shit clutch, l ran my superdream on car oil with no problems but it was a superdream Wink

Hi

A particular car oil he had problems with. Used fully synthetic car oil in several bikes with no ill effect on the clutches, including the 1200 Bandit.

All the best

Hi

Used car oil in my FZ (same engine as the Thunderace). Usual clutch problem is apparently wear in the damping springs giving some play and resulting in a very grabby clutch.

All the best

Keith

It is, and so is the chilli sauce on the kebabs they sell at my local chippy. Bet they are both red for the exact same reason too.

Sad

Oh well.

Saved money by fabricating a new horn bracket out of some metal my mates dad found in a drawer...

After trying fruitlessly to drill new holes in the existing bracket... What the fuck thats made of defies me...
