As I think I may have mentioned before, I am the Chair of the Fairtrade Steering Group for St Albans.

I was pleased as Punch to receive notification today that St Albans can now call itself a Fairtrade City!

Made my day. Thumbs Up

Is that the organisation that works for getting third world manufactures a better deal, or something completely different? Shocked

The accreditation comes from the Fairtrade Foundation.

The idea is that is you buy something with the Fairtrade mark on it, you know that the grower / manufacturer has been paid a fair price for his produce.

Regardless of how much the supermarket (or whoever) charges you, the producer will receive a fair price.

Fair Trade - a big fat scam.

I'm not denying that farmers in 3rd World countries may be getting more money than before, but it's not in proportion to the the extra Supermarkets charge for the end product.

People buy this fair trade stuff to ease their conscience and to make themselves feel better without actually having to do anything. They sit there eating their fair trade bananas surrounded by the lavish trappings of modern life in Britain while not giving a crap about what really going on.

At least I'm not a hypocrite - fair enough I do nothing to help but at least I don't pretend to care by buying this stuff.

Rant over.

Hi,

Buying fair trade stuff is not just pretending to care, ok buying fair trade teas bags from tescos is not going to cure the worlds ills but it helps a bit.
Tesco still get their cut, but the grower has also a a fairer deal then they would with tesco value brand.

This little bit of help does not preclude doing anything else, I know Sadie seems to do a lot (more than me). But if everyone bought fair trade stuff when they can it would reduce the amount of charity aid that is needed which we all pay either via direct donation or tax.
I would much rather the 'third world' developed a proper, self supporting economy than the 'first world' exploiting them, then giving aid to sort some of the mess out and complaining about it.

So I do buy fair trade stuff, I do care but yes I should probabaly do more.
You might be selfish dont assume we all are.

Regards
C

I do donate to charities, but not via the coffers of large supermarket chains who take more than they give. At least donating through charities a larger proportion of the money gets through.

I know charities have problems getting the money to the people that need it most because of corruption, but it has to be better than spending an extra 50p on an item from which only 2p goes to the farmer.

Hi,

The price is not necessarily a premium (see below) Bananas suffer more than most and I expect this is because they are not processed. (sadie ?)

So that help does not have to cost your more do do I think the supermarkets are making lots more, some more yes is the same way as with charity donations, not all the money gets to the source a good rate is 80p in the pound.

Regards
C
Anyway well done Sadie
For example a quick look at tescos :-

80 tea bags

fair trade direct = 1.42
Clipper fair trade = 1.38
Yorkshire tea = 1.57
Tetley = 1.43
PG 1.37

Bananas
Tesco (loose) 64p/kg
fair trade 1.14/kg
carabeen 1.37/kg

Sugar
Whitworths fair trade = 0.94/kg
Trade aid uk = 1.04/kg
Misc sugar = 0.72/kg
