Right. For those lucky few of us who have almost new (before its 1st MOT) bikes i have a warning for you all. Recently when i was having some repair work done through warranty on my Aprilia RX50 all of the frame and engine numbers were checked. Obviously this is just to make sure that the bike that is being repaired is the bike under warranty. However when the mechanic checked my frame number it seems the DVLA's Optical Charecter Recognition systems have misread the writing on the registration certificate. Basicly the computer picked the wrong one out of two alike charecters (in my case a '5' and an 'S'). The problem is this:- If you try to put your bike through an MOT with different frame numbers than what is on your V5, even if it is a reading error, by law the mechanic has to send a letter of to our friends at the DVLA. In return the DVLA will send you (the owner) a penalty of around £60. I would imagine this wouldent be the only consequence, probably if your bike was to be stolen and recovered there could be problems because of this descripency.

So: to all of those who have new(ish) bikes, i suggest checking your frame number against your V5 because once the mechanic spots it on the MOT theres no turning back. My question is: how do i change it? Can i just phone up the DVLA?

Cheers guys

I know a bike shop in south london that took a triumph daytona for an MOT and according to DVLA it was a vauxhall car. There are problems with the computers at DVLA.

It isnt that way for cars. I mot cars every day and sometimes the chassis number does not match what the v5/dvla database says. You are then allowed to put in exactly what YOU see at the time of test. I believe that the owner of the vehicle is then sent a letter by the dvla to confirm the alterations to the chassis number, not fined. Neutral Thinking

If you got a fine, then I would advise that you kick up holy shit, and DO NOT PAY!

You have done nothing wrong, and the DVLA can easily put it right.

Demand that it is sorted, and put it in writing to them. There is no need for you to pay a fine!
