Right, RVF was restricted a few months back, would guess I have done 2000 miles since. I muchly want to derestrict it, but couldnt take the carbs of a while back when I tried.

Now after it running sweetly for a few months, with a characteristic backfire popping on the over run, it has began to make a stupid sounding noise and stopped pulling above 80mph in 6th. And roughly 8k in every gear up from 3rd.

This just suddenly came along today.

The noise isnt anything but a drone, like if I was to have the fuel tap ON rather than RESERVE when it needed changing to RESERVE. Pisses me off no end, nout but trouble and bad luck this bike!

Fuel tap diaphragm is a known weak spot. However tends to make itself known when the fuel level in the tank is getting near the reserve level.

Does it happen with a full tank?

It might not be connected, but I'd check the rectifier on the bike, just to rule it out. I have heard that when it is on the blink, one of the symptons is a miss-fire at speed?

Might be barking up the wrong tree, but I'd check it just to rule it out.

Filled up with fuel today, still happened. Now the roughness starts at 40 in 3rd.

it revs throught the rev range sweetly in the first 2 gears, and when in neutral runs past to around 14~15krpm.

When I was on my way home the other day the lights turned themselves off while flicking between low and high beam. And the starter switch takes a while to try and turn the bike over. Sound like the reg/rect to you? I realise that these are a weak point on Honda 4's!

Quite possibly, another sign is them loosing charge due to messing up the battery.

Try putting a voltmeter across the battery terminals. Rev up to 5-6000 in neutral with the lights on. If the voltage exceeds 14.5/15 volts, the rectifier's frying your battery.

The standard Honda item is expensive and there's no telling how long it'll be before a new one is needed again (hopefully years). I've heard on 400greybike of members using rectifiers from other bikes, but not sure of the mods if this is the case.

I've got the rectifier off a Superdream on my ZXR and it runs fine. I think they're all virtually the same, just require a bit of bodging for each bike.
