Have a gander at the Samsung Syncmaster 930BF. Just received mine this week. Can't tell you how it performs 'cos I ain't tried it yet. It does however get good reviews and with 4m/s response time is one of the fastest and apparantly good for gamers. Thumbs Up

Well I've got my new comp and monitor up and running. I can say that the picture is smashing. I though I had a dead pixel but it was in fact spit.
No dead pixels then and everything looks super large compared to my old 17" crt.
Most pleased. Haven't tried it on a game yet though.

Bear in mind that a fast response speed is not the be all and end all. In some monitors it can mean crappy colours, because of the refresh speed. In fairness though, if your current TFT is three years old pretty much anything you buy now will seem the dog's bollocks. TFT technology has moved on a fair bit in that time.

Sorry to go off topic but what it is that people like about TFT's?

I use one all day at work in my main job, and its colour recognition is appauling and gives me a major head ache and its not like its a crap one, as its a Dell branded one.

OK there are exceptions to this like the Apple Cinema displays but I 99% of the time find CRT's much better for everything, like photos and gaming! Ok they might be bulky and old but they display colours properly and work as they should and for some reason CRT's DON'T(!) give me a head ache.

And a decent CRT is cheaper. Smile

They take up less space.

That's the biggest oxymoron I've read all week Razz . Major manufacturers are just as capable of putting out cheap, crap models as anyone else, Dell moreso than most.

I only succummed to a TFT at home about six months ago. I felt that decent models were now at the stage where they could compete with CRTs. I got ride of my, frankly, monstrously huge five year old Sony Trinitron 19" CRT and got an NEC 19" TFT. The picture quality is not as good (and it's a £400 model, not a cheap one) but, as Bendy says, the space it freed up on my desk makes it worthwhile.

I got a neovo f-419 19" with res of 1280 by 1024 with a good refresh rate (this was confirmed by my workmate who lives and raves in the matrix)...set me back £130 with P&P.

I'm a designer so I have a fairly high expectation after using a 21 inch sony trinitron CRT which ran at 1600 x 1200. TBH the benefits far outweigh any little glitches in display clarity. good buy at a ver reasonable price.

I

They look the tits. Everytime I see a CRT it just reminds me of the 90s.

That Samsung is a very good monitor, apparently. I was reading a computer magazine and it got 6 stars. Why they had a 6 star system, I have no idea. Laughing

I believe it's actually 3m/s response time, at least that one was. Samsung seem to have concentrated on the LCD/TFT market in the past few years, so chances are they're getting pretty good at it.

There are only a handful of companies that actually make TFT panels, everyone else sources from them. Samsung are one of the companies that make them.

I suppose that makes them a fairly good budget option as well, then.

Noticed in Dixon's their selling Samsung 19" TFT screens for £199.

Used to use them at work, seem decent enough for watching DVD's on.

Samsung, LG and Hitachi TFT's are all pretty good. I had a Hitachi 17" one that cost a small fortune several years back as it was one of the few ones that had a decent response time. Now almost all have decent response times. I have a Dell 20" widescreen one now which is pretty impressive. Dell stuff is pretty well built, not sure who makes there stuff, but there TFT's are quite highy rated these days.

Well, I've been playing quake on it most of yesterday, and it's a great improvement. I see none of the ghosting problems that some TFT's suffer from so I'm happy. £250 is a lot of wedge but I'm sure the price will plummit soon when it gets replaced with a newer model.
BTW, if anyone likes gaming I've just got an "icemat" and a logitech mx518. Both highly recommended as well. Thumbs Up
