Something occured to me yesterday while I was out enjoying the sunshine.
I was sitting at a roundabout and saw a Ducatti 916 go rumbling by - stunning, sleek, compact and poised. However sitting atop this bike was someone who looked, let's say a 'very, very well fed' Shocked .

Now my little ZXR400 is approx 170kg which equates to approx 26stone.
I weigh approx 11.5 stone naked(73kg), with bike kit on I'm probably well over 14stone(80kg)? - probably more or less average.
This means that my weight on the bike is about a third of the entire mass of us both combined! - Me =80kg, Bike = 170kg = 250kg.

It wouldn't sursprise me if Mr Ducatti in his leathers weighed in at about the same as his bike! This can't be good.

We read about manufacturers shaving off a few grams here and there, centralising mass and increasing fractions of torque, but what effect does a good Sunday lunch(or two) have on a bikes performance? Is there an optimum rider weight for different bikes irrespective of suspension/shock settings?

See here for your conversions: Thumbs Up

Perfect rider weight is about 2 stone.

Think the jockeys from the simpsons.

Just being over 6 foot puts you at a huge disadvantage.

And ive found out since going to uni and trying to feed up the misses with pasta ive gone up to 17 stone Crying or Very sadEmbarassed

Interesting

I can appreciate. Since I started riding I have lost about 10 kg and it makes a difference. I am 168cm so fairly short too which means I can keep up with biffas on sportier tackle.

When I said 'approx' I really did mean very roughly Wink ! I didn't even bother reading the second figure 80kg - 90kg what's difference!?

That's my point really, a bikes weight is scrutinised down to the nearest few grams but a riders weights can vary massively.

It's certainly going to affect the handling - the easiest way to see how is to put a rucksack on with 2 stone in it, and see what a difference that makes to your balance!

At around 2 stone heavier than I was before my crash, I certainly noticed the difference when back on my scooter. It would have been interesting to have been able to ride the Fazer again and see how that experience was changed by my increased porkiness.

I guess nervousness and weaker muscles would probably have skewed the results though.

i tend to think of my weight in stones and bike weight in kg, so its interesting comparing the two

i think the main thing with heavy or light ppl, is that they adjust the rear suspension as otherwise it wont work so well, wich could be a bit dangerous if the bike is being pushed hard

Out of interest, how much did you weigh without all the gear on? (if you don't mind me asking of course!)
Or just tell me how much your gear weighs only if you'd rather not say.

To be totally honest, i've only ever seen one "in shape" rider and he was an arrogant poser c*nt.

Very few of us are perfect so there's no point in trying to pretend we are!

Although being a kid i weigh 70 KG a 600RR seemed happy enough to chuck me off the back!

I weighed 54kg when I started riding on my ZZR250
Now I weigh 82kg and am just getting into bikes again!
I need new leathers now Embarassed
I will lose the weight though and for me the best idea I can come up with for weight vs handling is the ability to climb over your bike and affect it's turn in just the way you want it to, not too little and not too much
Have a look at the GP riders, all little blokes who weigh stuff all
I think sette gibernau weighs the most
Shinya Nakano weighed 54kg last time I looked too

i weigh 11 1/2 st and am 6 foot, always thought that was pretty average for a european (englishman)

european spec bike probably set up for the average body type, so aways try and stay around the 11 1/2 to 12st mark.

anyway thats my twisted logic

rob

ps. go on diet, its the cheapest performance upgrade you can do

I weigh 9st 9lb and I find it hard to make a bike handle properly.

Most bikes are set up too hard as standard, and don't react properly to inputs. They feel harsh and over taut, and flighty.

Then I got the Buell, and I looked in the owners manual. There is a table of suspension settings based upon rider weight!

It says weight fully kitted, so I weighed myself wearing my full bike gear, read the table and set up my suspension to suit.

Results?

I've often wondered if suspension settings and rider weight made much of a difference to handling.
I'm a skinny runt, and kitted up I probably weigh about 12st. I think I'll have to dable with ZX6Rs suspension as I'm finding the front end really flighty. Thumbs Up

Do you think I'm a bloody woman? Of course I don't mind. I weigh around the 14stone mark I think.

There are benefits to weighing 7stone 4lbs

disadvantages include not being able to stand still in strong winds when everyone else is perfectly planted.

I'm about 45kg?
GPZ is 180kg I think,

would be interesting to get a hefty dude on an equal vehicle and see if there is any noticable differene.

I know when I rode my varadero 125 it would beat a lad on his CBR125 who was roughly 12stone I think.

Rider weight is usually very underlooked. People spend 1000's of pounds on making their bike 1KG lighter, but if they are 20 stone in the first place, wouldn't it be far more benficial to lose weight to expose the full potential. Smile
