Hey peeps.

This should be the g33ks equivelant of a wet dream.

I have about ~£900* to spend and my main use out of a pc is the internet, playing crap games, talking shite to dodsi on msn and pretending to use office applications. However, I do like the thought of burning dvd's and encoding video and the pc not taking decades to do so.

All I want is something QUIET with a good tft monitor. I do like the thought of this machine being able to play cutting edge games in 'half a years time' without having to change the graphics card xx times. Would like a tft monitor that is sellable on for a good £150 as well as I already have a 19" tft. Laughing

Now, I'm not a lazy bastard, I have checked the dell website and they do decent deals but really, their charges for some of their equipment really pisses me off. Par example - £5 for drivers cd, £8 for a printer usb cable (when they give you a printer anyway so most people would buy it) Ebay machines is too much of a gamble to me, they are cheap but mostly they use unbranded crap memory and I just KNOW looking at the cases they come in, that they'll be incredibly noisy, despite their claims.

Is there any other computer manufacturer out there that do good deals????

Cheers

Greg

P.S Last machine was built by me and it was a noisy ugly piece of crap so if you are going to suggest a home build, it'll have to be bloody worth it! Laughing

*£900 is a ball park figure, I don't want to spend a whole lot. I am selling my current 'steed' for £150 and hopefully the monitor for the same amount.

Oh aye and another thing - How many bloody cpu's are there out at the moment? Dual core, pentium D, vivo?? Like that means anything to me!!! I understand about memory, thats about it it seems.

I'm lost on the benefits of pci-e and what equivelant agp card there is??!!? Confused

And one last note, SATA hard drives.

160GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst™ cache [Included in Price]

160GB Serial ATA RAID 1 Mirror [2x160GB 7200rpm drives with DataBurstTM cache] [add £105.76 or £3/month1

Why an extra £105?!?!

Gawd, you leave the computer scene for two seconds and look what happens.

Oh and for those that think it might be relevant my current system is:

P4 2.5GHZ
1GB DDR400 CRUCIAL (2 X 512)
128MB 6800LE XFX GPU
DVD-RW
DVD-ROM
CD-RW
19" TFT

Because there's an extra hard drive, just a mirror of the other one.

Get an antec case if noise is a issue.

Don't think you'll get much of an Alienware machine for £900 though. Very good service though, my brother has one and when there's been a problem with it they've sorted it straight away.

Might be worth looking at the Acer E300 / E500 models. Their warrantees suck arse but the machines are a good spec for the money.

Alienware is far, FAR too £££, twice as worse than Dell, infact, you're paying for the image, their spec is really quite crap when you go to configure!!! Shocked

Any more? Sad

Crap? Shocked

They consistantly out-benchmark other (supposed) gaming rigs and get very high scores in reviews. They ain't cheap, granted, but they're certainly not crap.

Don't know what they're like as a Company, but you get the idea with the price and specs.

Oh aye, I know, crap with the prices really thats what I meant. If you go and configure, the £900+ system starts with something like 256mb ram!!! And a crap graphics card too, so it all adds up really when you start getting the stuff you'd want. Sad

Oh aye and NO MONITOR EITHER!! Well, its an optional extra!!

I think you should build it yourself, you've done it before so you know what your doing.

For the looks you just have to buy a nice case with enough space, the Silentium is supposed to be good for low noise. I'd suggest an AMD as Pentium 4s tend to run hotter so the fan is working more, hence more noise. Some of the new Q-Tec PSUs are nice and quiet too. Fanless is quieter but does cause higher temperatures inside the case.

It would make sense seeing as you don't want another monitor.

Also it does work out a hell of a lot cheaper!

To give you a ballpark, I specced and built a system to go in someones living room recently. Main aim was to keep it silent, relatively futureproof and unobtrusive. Came to around £700 with the cost of a legal copy of XP pro and a 19" DVI TFT in there. I'd definitely say homebuild is the way forward unless you specifically want a warranty. Admittedly it's no longer a case of anyone buying a package deal being an idiot, but there are still substantial savings to be made doing it yourself. Lets face it, building a PC (sticking tab A into slot B) really isn't rocket science now, is it.

Spec of what was built (this is rough, going from memory):
AMD 64 3000 (low end, you have a bigger budget and they're cheaper now hence could buy better)
MSI K8N diamond mobo
Antec Sonata II case
1 gig Corsair PC3200
XFX 6600GT (can buy two if you want to SLI them or go with a newer 7xxx series)
AG Neovo 19" DVI TFT
~160gb of HD, SATA II raid 0 setup

All in all it was (in my opinion obviously) a decent machine for the price, I can't be arsed to go digging for any of the rest of the spec but suffice to say it's quiet enough that it's not obtrusive even with the TV off and it will cope with most games with relative ease. Upgradeability is the key though, so many package systems have a mobo that is as cheap as they can possibly get away with, means you're stuck after a short while.

As an FYI, the Qtech PSUs are usually cheap for a reason. I certainly wouldn't use one again. Clean rails? WTF are they?

Confused

I've had a 550W Q-Tec in this PC for ages now. Admittedly my 600W in my fileserver started making an awful racket after 64 days uptime. Gutted, I was going for a personal record Mad

As for a motheboard I'd reccomend ASUS or Gigabyte, when I worked in a shop thats what we used, we found them very reliable, they also do a lot of high end models. Thumbs Up

there was a thread about bendy buying a pc
she got one from here

https://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZdellfactoryoutlet

its dell's seconds shop
she was told hers would be scratched but it wasnt

there are some fairly high spec machines in there if you look and you always add bits to them later.
